About Tokyo

Tokyo adds an accommodation tax to hotel and ryokan nights, and some wards limit registered private rentals to weekends in all or part of their area. For a driver the harder question is the car: Japanese law bars leaving one in the same spot on a road for 12 hours, or 8 at night.

Shinjuku

A commercial and administrative centre around Shinjuku Station, the busiest railway station in the world, with the towers of Nishi-Shinjuku and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. It suits a first visit with lines in every direction. Shinjuku City bars registered private rentals from Monday noon to Friday noon in its residential-only zones.

Shibuya

The ward of Shibuya Crossing, with Harajuku, Ebisu and Omotesandō among its neighbourhoods. The area around Shibuya Station has been under redevelopment since 2010, with work scheduled to run to fiscal 2034. It suits shopping and a stay close to one of the busiest stations in the world.

Ginza and Tokyo Station

Ginza is the upscale shopping district of Chūō, with department stores, boutiques and restaurants; Tokyo Station, about 2 km away, is the main terminal for Shinkansen and other inter-city trains. It suits a short, central stay in a hotel. Chūō City allows registered private rentals only from Saturday noon to Monday noon.

Car and parking

Chūō-dōri closes to cars on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from noon to 5 p.m., to 6 p.m. from April to September. Ginza's official site recommends the Nishi-ginza, Tokyu Plaza Ginza and Ginza Six car parks, with discounts or free parking against purchases.

Asakusa and Ueno

Two districts of Taitō in the old Shitamachi: Asakusa, known for the Sensō-ji temple, and Ueno, around its station and Ueno Park, home of the Tokyo National Museum. It suits sightseeing in the old city. Homes registered for private rental from 1 October 2026 may not host guests on weekdays.

Shinagawa

The business district around Shinagawa Station, which sits in Minato, not Shinagawa ward, and is served by the Tōkaidō Shinkansen and Keikyū trains. Haneda is about 15 minutes away by train (via GetCar). It suits early flights and trips west by Shinkansen.

Haneda is about 13 km by road, the shortest run of the central areas. Street parking follows the national rules, so ask the hotel about its garage.

Kamata and Haneda

Kamata is a district of Ōta, the ward that holds Haneda Airport. Ōta was the first place in Japan to allow special-zone private rentals, which need a stay of at least 2 nights and have no yearly cap, and had 481 certified ones in mid-2026. It suits early flights, a car collected at the airport and longer stays.

Questions

How much is the accommodation tax in Tokyo?

In hotels and ryokan, JPY 100 per person per night when the room-only rate is JPY 10,000 to under 15,000 per person, JPY 200 from JPY 15,000, and nothing below JPY 10,000. From 1 April 2027 it becomes 3% of the room-only rate at JPY 13,000 and over, and covers minpaku too.

Can a private rental in Tokyo host guests on weekdays?

It depends on the ward. Chūō City, with Ginza, allows minpaku only from Saturday noon to Monday noon; Shinjuku bars them from Monday noon to Friday noon in residential-only zones; Taitō bars weekdays for homes registered from 1 October 2026. Every registered home has a cap of 180 nights a year.

Why do hotels in Japan copy the passport?

Japanese rules require lodgings to record the nationality and passport number of foreign guests without an address in Japan, and the government asks guests to show the passport and let it be photocopied.
