About Porto

Porto's old centre is compact, hilly and ringed by camera-controlled zones. Guests with a rental car do best either parking once at the edge or sleeping in the newer districts towards the sea.

Airport
Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO), about 11 km north-west of the Clérigos Tower, and about 16 km by road to the Ribeira. Source
Tourist tax
EUR 3 per night, at most 7 consecutive nights, since 1 December 2024. Children aged 12 and under are exempt, as are some medical and disability stays, with proof. Paid to the lodging at the start, during or at the end of the stay. Source
Short-term rental rules
An Alojamento Local (AL) must show its name and registration number in its advertising (Decreto-Lei 128/2014, art. 17), so a legal listing carries an AL number. Source

Parking with a rental car
Five camera-controlled zones (Ribeira, Flores, Carmelitas, Cedofeita, Santa Catarina) admit only registered cars. Street parking in zone 1 costs EUR 1.20 an hour with a 2 hour maximum; zones 2 to 4 cost less. Source
Monthly stays
A month in an AL stays an AL stay, and the tax stops after 7 consecutive nights. A lease for a transitory purpose can run under a year if the purpose is written in; the deposit on a lease may not exceed two months' rent. Source

Ribeira and Baixa

The riverfront, the cathedral hill, São Bento station and the Clérigos area, all on foot. It suits first-time visitors and short stays. It is hilly, busy and central, and not the place for a quiet night.

Car and parking

The Ribeira, Flores, Carmelitas and Santa Catarina camera zones are all here, so do not drive in unregistered. The Alfândega car park by the Ribeira is open 24 hours, and zone 1 street parking has a 2 hour maximum.

Cedofeita

Shops, galleries and cafés around Rua de Cedofeita and the Bombarda arts district, a walk from the centre without being on the tourist riverfront. It suits visitors who like browsing and eating out.

Car and parking

Cedofeita is one of the five camera zones, so a rental car should stay out of the restricted streets. Use street parking outside the zone or a car park such as Trindade or Praça de Lisboa.

Bonfim

A residential district east of the centre, near Campanhã station. It suits longer stays and guests who prefer a local neighbourhood to a tourist one.

Boavista

The business district around Casa da Música and the Avenida da Boavista, with a straight run to the sea. It suits work trips and guests who want the car within easy reach.

Foz do Douro

Where the river meets the Atlantic: promenades, the sea and a residential feel. It suits guests who want the coast and accept a tram or bus ride into the centre.

Matosinhos

A separate town north of Porto with a long beach, popular with surfers and for seafood, and the closest of these areas to the airport. It suits beach stays and guests arriving late.

Matosinhos is a separate municipality, and its parking rules were not verified as of September 2026. Ask the host whether a space comes with the booking.

Vila Nova de Gaia riverside

The port wine lodges and the classic view back across the Douro to the Ribeira. It suits visitors who want that view and short walks over the bridge.

Car and parking

Gaia is a separate municipality and its parking rules were not verified. The lower deck of the Dom Luís bridge, the direct link to the Ribeira, is closed to cars except from 20:00 to 06:00.

Which Porto area is best for a first visit?

Ribeira and the Baixa put the riverfront, the cathedral hill, São Bento station and the Clérigos area within walking distance. With a car, use a car park such as Alfândega by the Ribeira, which is open 24 hours, rather than driving into the restricted streets.

How much is the Porto tourist tax?

Can a rental car drive into Porto's old town?

Not freely. Ribeira, Flores, Carmelitas, Cedofeita and Santa Catarina are camera-controlled zones with rising bollards, and only cars registered on the city's platform may enter. A visitor registration costs EUR 7.50 per 15 minutes.
