A month in Porto
A month in Porto can be a long Alojamento Local booking or a lease for a transitory purpose. The difference decides the tax, the deposit and what the contract has to say.

What a month means legally here
Portugal has one national law for holiday lets, the Alojamento Local regime. A month in a registered AL is still an AL stay: the AL number is on the listing, the lodging files the guest registration form, and the Porto tourist tax applies but stops after 7 consecutive nights. That is EUR 21 per guest aged 13 or over for a month in one place.
The alternative is a lease. A fixed-term residential lease normally runs at least a year, but not a lease for a special transitory purpose such as work, study or tourism, provided the purpose is written into the contract. Only one transitory lease for tourist purposes may be signed per unit per calendar year.
The areas that suit a month

Boavista and Bonfim suit a longer, quieter stay outside the camera zones: Boavista for a business-district base with a straight road to the sea, Bonfim for a residential street near Campanhã station. For a month by the sea, Foz do Douro inside the city or Matosinhos just beyond it.
The Ribeira and Cedofeita are lively for a week and harder for a month with a car, since both sit inside camera zones. This ranking is editorial.
The paperwork
Deposit: on a lease the deposit (caução) may not exceed two months' rent, and rent may not be paid more than two months in advance. A platform booking is not a lease; the platform's terms apply.
Registration at the lodging: a boletim de alojamento is filed for every foreign guest, EU nationals included.
EU citizens staying longer than three months request a Certificado de Registo from the Câmara Municipal within 30 days after the first three months. In Porto the request can be made in person by appointment or online.
Visitors from outside the EU are limited to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area; longer stays need a national visa. Non-EU visitors who arrive in Portugal from another Schengen country must declare their entry within three working days, unless they stay in lodging that files the registration form for them. Whether a landlord on a lease files that form for a tenant was not checked, so ask.
The EU Entry/Exit System, which registers non-EU nationals travelling for a short stay in 29 European countries, has been fully operational since 10 April 2026.
What platforms call long stays
Vrbo's monthly-stays page, as archived in June 2026, describes stays of 28 nights or more and says select homes offer a discount for them. Agoda lets partners create long-stay promotions, invites some to offer a discount on bookings of more than 28 days, and permits stays of up to 90 days. How Expedia filters long stays could not be verified.
The label does not change the law. An AL number means an AL stay; a direct contract stating a transitory purpose means a lease.
Pitfalls
A base inside a camera zone with a car and no plan for it. Entry needs registration on the city's platform, and a visitor registration is charged per 15 minutes.
Counting on street parking for a month. Zone 1 has a 2 hour maximum, and the resident-priority policy announced on 16 September 2026 may tighten street parking for visitors.
A lease without its transitory purpose written in, or a deposit above two months' rent.
Miscounting Schengen days: the 90 in 180 limit covers the whole Schengen area.
Assuming bills are included. No reliable source on typical practice was found, so ask.
Assuming Porto's rules cover the whole metropolitan area. Matosinhos and Vila Nova de Gaia are separate municipalities; their parking rules and any tourist tax of their own were not checked for this guide.
