Split Airport is in Kaštela, 20 km from Split and 6 km from Trogir, so the choice is wider than the city itself. The Old Town is for walking; the bay towns and the residential east are easier with a car.

Old Town (Diocletian's Palace)

The historic core in and around Diocletian's Palace: the Riva, the markets and the ferry port on foot. It suits a short first visit for people who want to walk everywhere and accept summer crowds and noise. Stays are mostly rooms and apartments in old stone buildings, plus small hotels.

Car and parking

Secondary sources describe the palace core as pedestrian-only; no city decision was found. The Riva and Stari plac car parks charge EUR 4 for the first hour and EUR 5 for each further hour from May to September, and zone 1 street parking is EUR 1.20 an hour with day tickets from EUR 12 to 18. Agree a drop-off point with the host and park outside the core.

Bačvice

Split's sandy town beach, with nightlife and the Old Town, the ferry port and the bus station a short walk away. It suits beach-first visitors. It is busy and loud in summer.

Split Parking street zones apply across the city, but which zone covers the streets above Bačvice was not verified. Street parking is free on Sundays citywide.

Žnjan

Newer residential blocks east of the centre, next to the long pebble beach at Žnjan. It suits families and longer stays, quieter than the Old Town.

A residential district outside the historic core; its street zone status was not verified. Split Parking garages in nearby districts such as Sukoišan and Pujanke sell monthly passes at EUR 38.49 for individuals.

Kaštela

A string of seven seaside villages along the bay between the airport, Split and Trogir. It suits drivers using the area as a road-trip base and monthly stays away from the crowds, and its hotel tourist tax is lower than Split's.

Trogir

A small walled UNESCO-listed old town on an islet, the closest base to the airport, with beaches on the neighbouring island of Čiovo around Okrug.

Trogir parking rules were not verified. The Croatian Auto Club lists the D8 coast road around Trogir and Split among the places where summer traffic builds up.

How much is the tourist tax in Split in 2026?

In hotels and other commercial accommodation, EUR 2.65 per person per night from 1 April to 30 September and EUR 1.86 the rest of the year, the same amounts the county set for 2027. Children under 12 are exempt and ages 12 to 18 pay half. In private household apartments the host pays an annual lump sum per bed instead of a per-night charge, and must display in each unit that the tax is included in the price.

Can a car drive into Diocletian's Palace?

Secondary sources describe the palace and the streets around it as pedestrian-only; no city decision defining the zone was found. The nearest official car parks are on the Riva and at Stari plac.

Which area is closest to the airport?

Trogir, about 5 km by road, and Kaštela, about 6 km. Split's Old Town is about 24 km by road.

Will the host ask for a passport?
