Historic Rome sits inside camera-controlled traffic zones, and Roma Mobilità lists no permit for hotel guests. Choosing a base means choosing where the car will sleep: inside the zones without it, or outside them with it.

Fiumicino (FCO), 32 km from the centre; the Leonardo Express reaches Termini in 32 minutes, every 15 minutes. Source

Traffic zones (ZTL)
The Centro Storico is closed to unauthorised cars Monday to Friday 06:30 to 18:00, Saturday 14:00 to 18:00 and Friday and Saturday 23:00 to 03:00. Trastevere, the Tridente, San Lorenzo and Testaccio have their own hours. Since 1 July 2026 electric cars need a permit too. Source

Roma Mobilità lists no ZTL permit for hotel guests or visitors: transit permits require a parking space inside the zone, and only the permit itself authorises entry. Source

Blue bays cost EUR 1.00 an hour outside the ZTLs and EUR 1.20 inside them. Source
Park and ride
About 35 car parks at Metro, rail and bus stations charge EUR 1.50 for 12 consecutive hours or EUR 2.50 for 16. Source
Monthly stays

Centro Storico

The old centre around the Pantheon, Piazza Navona and Campo de' Fiori, with the main sights on foot. It suits a first visit and short stays, and it stays lively late.

Car and parking

Inside the Centro Storico ZTL, closed to unauthorised cars on weekdays 06:30 to 18:00, Saturday afternoons and Friday and Saturday nights, with a 30 km/h limit since 15 January 2026. Street parking inside the zone costs EUR 1.20 an hour.

Small squares, bars and shops between the Colosseum and Via Nazionale, a walk from Termini. It suits visitors who want the centre with a neighbourhood feel.

Medieval lanes, trattorias and bars across the Tiber. It suits food and nightlife, and it is loud on weekend nights.

Car and parking

Its own ZTL: closed Monday to Saturday 06:30 to 10:00, and at night on Friday and Saturday 21:30 to 03:00, also Wednesday and Thursday from May to October, but not in August. The Trastevere car park on Via delle Mura Portuensi is open 24 hours.

Wide residential streets and shops by the Vatican and Castel Sant'Angelo, calmer at night. It suits families and longer stays.

Car and parking

Outside the five ZTLs on Roma Mobilità's maps. Blue bays cost EUR 1.00 an hour, and ATAC turned more free streets here into paid bays in 2026. The Cipro park and ride on Metro A is open 06:00 to 22:00, Monday to Saturday.

Esquilino and Termini

The streets around the main station, Santa Maria Maggiore and Piazza Vittorio. It suits arrivals by train and the airport train, and it is busy around the station.

Testaccio

A working-class district with a covered market and a food tradition, near the Pyramid and Ostiense station. It suits longer stays and visitors who like a local base.

Car and parking

A night ZTL covers the streets around Via Galvani on Friday and Saturday, 23:00 to 03:00, but not in August; the rest of the district lies outside the ZTLs. The Partigiani car park on Piazzale dei Partigiani is open 24 hours.

EUR

A planned district in the south, with Metro B into the centre. Of these areas it is the shortest drive to Fiumicino, and it suits a trip where the car does most of the work.

How much is the tourist tax in Rome?

Roma Capitale charges EUR 3.00 to 10.00 per person per night by type of lodging: EUR 6.00 in a B&B or short-let flat, EUR 7.50 in a four-star hotel and EUR 10.00 in a five-star. It stops after 10 consecutive nights in the same place, and children under 10 pay nothing.

Can a guest drive to a hotel in the centre of Rome?

Not while the zone is active. The Centro Storico ZTL is closed to unauthorised cars Monday to Friday 06:30 to 18:00 and Saturday 14:00 to 18:00, and on Friday and Saturday nights. Roma Mobilità lists no permit for hotel guests: transit permits need a parking space inside the zone.

How can a guest tell that a holiday flat in Rome is licensed?

Every licensed stay in Italy has a national identification code, the CIN, shown outside the building and in every listing. The host must also see your identity document and register you with the police within 24 hours.
