Where to stay in Mykonos
The airport sits about 2.5 km by road from the edge of Chora, and Kalafatis, at the far end of the south-east coast, about 12.5 km. The base decides how much of the stay happens on foot in town and how much in the car.

How the areas differ
Chora is the town: a maze of whitewashed lanes around the old port, with Little Venice and its balconies over the sea between the Kastro and Skarpa, and the windmills in a row on the south side. The island's bus terminals start here.
To the south-west, the municipality calls Ornos one of the busiest and most family-oriented beaches, a sheltered bay with many hotels; Agios Ioannis, next door, faces Delos and suits a calm swim. On the south coast, Platis Gialos is large, organised and surrounded by hotels, with most of the island's KTEL routes leading there, and Psarou beside it is an organised, cosmopolitan beach with water sports.
North of Chora, Agios Stefanos is a sheltered beach near the new port at Tourlos. Inland, Ano Mera sits on the road to the south-east beaches of Kalo Livadi, Elia and Kalafatis, about 8 to 12.5 km from the airport.
Staying with a rental car
In Chora, park at the edge and walk. The Mykonos Port Fund allows only delivery vans with up to a tonne of load onto the old port seafront, for loading between 06:00 and 11:00, and the municipality's traffic notices name a car park at the old port. On the south side, the asphalt road from the centre to Megali Ammos beach, five minutes on foot, has safe space to park, according to the municipality. One island rental company's terms forbid driving in Mykonos town or parking on the circular town road.
Outside town, the municipality notes comfortable parking right behind the beach at Agios Stefanos. Ornos has limited space on the main road, on the square in front of the beach and in private areas with free access, and Agios Ioannis a small square with limited spaces. Both roads to Kalo Livadi are asphalted, and the road to the south-east beaches runs through Ano Mera. The municipality publishes no parking information for Platis Gialos or Psarou; most KTEL buses serve Platis Gialos, and caiques leave its beach for Paraga, Paradise, Super Paradise, Agrari and Elia.
At the airport, limited free short-stay parking sits opposite the terminal, and from 1 April to 31 October 2026 the controlled access area in front of it is reserved for vans, buses and taxis under contract with Fraport Greece, so arrange the car hand-over away from that area. What the tourist tax and registration rules mean for a guest
Greece charges a climate crisis resilience fee per night for each room or property, and Mykonos has no rate of its own: one national table applies, set by Law 5162/2024 and now in article 44 of the Code of indirect taxes (Law 5177/2025), unchanged for 2026. From April to October a short-term rental pays EUR 8 a night, or EUR 15 for a detached house over 80 m2; rooms to let pay EUR 2, hotels EUR 2 to 15 by stars and tourist villas EUR 15. From November to March a short-term rental pays EUR 2, or EUR 4 for a detached house over 80 m2, and hotels EUR 0.50 to 4. The host charges it after the stay and before departure, on a separate receipt, and a free stay pays nothing.
Two charges are local to Mykonos. The municipal visitor fee on the rent, borne by the guest, is 0.5% under national law, and council decision 39/2026 keeps it at 0.75% for 2026 for hotels, campsites, hostels, tourist villas and residences, and rooms to let; the decision does not name short-term rentals. Cruise passengers pay a separate fee under article 27 of Law 5162/2024: EUR 20 each from June to September, EUR 12 in April, May and October and EUR 4 from November to March.
Every short-term rental must be in the AADE registry and show its 11-digit property registry number, the AMA, on every platform and advert, and the host declares each stay to AADE; properties with a tourism licence show a 16-digit ΕΣΛ or a 7-digit ΜΑΓ number instead. Since 1 October 2025, Law 5170/2025 has also required smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, a first aid kit, a guide to emergency numbers and civil liability insurance, with a EUR 5,000 fine for a host who fails the rules. A listing without an AMA is worth a question before paying.
When to book what
The fee drops on 1 November: a short-term rental that pays EUR 8 a night in October pays EUR 2 in November. Winter travellers should check the day of the flight, since runway works suspend all flights every Thursday from 19 November 2026 to 18 March 2027, apart from 22, 24 and 31 December and 5 and 7 January.
In peak season, the municipality says, KTEL buses run to the most popular destinations until 04:00, so a beach base does not tie a late evening in Chora to the car.
