About Mykonos

Mykonos is about 14 km long and 10 km wide, and the airport sits about 2.5 km by road from the edge of Chora. The base decides how much of the stay happens on foot in town and how much on the roads to the beaches.

Airport
Mykonos (JMK), about 2.5 km by road from Fabrika at the southern edge of Chora. From 19 November 2026 to 18 March 2027 all flights stop every Thursday for runway works, except on five dates around Christmas and New Year. Source

The old port in Chora and the new port at Tourlos, about 3 km apart by road. A SeaBus links them every half hour for EUR 2 and carries luggage. Source

Short-term rental rules
Every short-term rental must be in the AADE registry and show its 11-digit AMA number on every platform and advert; licensed properties show a 16-digit ΕΣΛ or a 7-digit ΜΑΓ number instead. The host declares each stay to AADE. Source
Municipal visitor fee
A fee on the rent, borne by the guest: 0.5% under national law. The Mykonos council kept it at 0.75% for 2026 for hotels, campsites, hostels, tourist villas and residences, and rooms to let (decision 39/2026). Source
Parking in Chora
On the old port seafront only delivery vans with up to a tonne of load may drive, for loading from 06:00 to 11:00 (Port Fund notice, June 2026). A municipal traffic notice of July 2025 names a car park at the old port. Source

Under 60 days per contract is a short-term rental in Greece, with the per-night fee; 60 days or more without extra services is an ordinary lease. Airbnb calls 28 nights or more a monthly stay. Source

Chora (Mykonos Town)

The town: a maze of whitewashed lanes around the old port, with Little Venice between the Kastro and Skarpa and the windmills in a row on the south side. It holds the island's bus terminals and two taxi ranks, so it suits a first visit on foot. A guest with a car and heavy bags parks at the edge and carries them in.

Car and parking

Only delivery vans with up to a tonne of load may drive on the old port seafront, for loading from 06:00 to 11:00, and a municipal traffic notice names a car park at the old port. On the south side, the asphalt road to Megali Ammos, five minutes on foot from the centre, has safe space to park. One island rental company forbids driving in Mykonos town or parking on the circular town road in its terms.

Ornos and Agios Ioannis

Two bays on the south-west, about 3 to 4 km by road from Chora. The municipality calls Ornos one of the busiest and most family-oriented beaches on the island, a sheltered bay with many hotels, restaurants and boats to the southern beaches. Agios Ioannis, next to it, faces Delos and suits a calm swim, with holiday homes, villas and large hotels around it.

Car and parking

The municipality describes parking at both as limited: at Ornos on the main road, on the square in front of the beach or in private areas with free access, and at Agios Ioannis in a small square with limited spaces at the end of the road. KTEL buses to both leave from Fabrika in Chora.

Platis Gialos and Psarou

Neighbouring beaches on the south coast. Platis Gialos is large, organised and surrounded by hotels, and the municipality calls it ideal for families with children; Psarou, next door, is an organised, cosmopolitan beach with water sports. Caiques leave Platis Gialos for Paraga, Paradise, Super Paradise, Agrari and Elia.

Car and parking

The municipality publishes no parking information for either beach. Most KTEL routes from Fabrika go to Platis Gialos, and the caiques from its beach reach the southern beaches without the car.

Agios Stefanos and Tourlos

The west coast about 3 km north of Chora, a short distance from the new port at Tourlos. The municipality describes Agios Stefanos as a sheltered sandy beach for all ages, with small and large hotels and luxury residences around it and a settlement on the hill above. It suits ferry arrivals and families.

Car and parking

The municipality notes comfortable parking with easy access right behind the beach. A regular KTEL bus runs during the tourist season from the pier at the old port in Chora to the new port and Agios Stefanos.

Ano Mera

The inland village on the road from Chora to the south-east beaches, about 7.5 km by road from Fabrika. It suits a quieter base with a car, about 4 km from the beaches at Elia and Kalafatis.

Car and parking

No official parking source for Ano Mera was found as of September 2026, so ask the host. The road to the south-east beaches passes through the village, and KTEL buses to Ano Mera leave from the square behind the OTE building in Chora.

Elia, Kalo Livadi and Kalafatis

The beaches of the south-east: Kalo Livadi, one of the longest and widest on the island, Elia, the last stop but one of the boats from Platis Gialos, and Kalafatis, where windsurfing is widespread, with Agia Anna beside it. They suit beach holidays and villa stays on the far side of the island from Chora.

Car and parking

Both access roads to Kalo Livadi are asphalted, according to the municipality, and the road to these beaches runs through Ano Mera. KTEL buses from the square behind the OTE building in Chora serve Kalafatis and Elia.

Is there a tourist tax in Mykonos?

Greece charges a climate crisis resilience fee per night for each room or property, with the same national table on Mykonos. A short-term rental pays EUR 8 a night from April to October and EUR 2 from November to March, or EUR 15 and EUR 4 for a detached house over 80 m2, amounts unchanged for 2026. A municipal visitor fee on the rent comes on top: 0.5% nationally, and 0.75% on Mykonos in 2026 for hotels, rooms to let and tourist villas.

Can a rental car drive into Chora?

Plan to park at the edge. Chora is a maze of lanes, the old port seafront is open only to delivery vans with up to a tonne of load from 06:00 to 11:00, and one island rental company forbids driving in town or parking on the ring road in its terms. A car park at the old port is named in the municipality's traffic notices.

Which area is closest to the new port?

Agios Stefanos, about 1.5 km by road from the new port at Tourlos, with comfortable parking right behind the beach according to the municipality. The old port in Chora is about 3 km from the new port, and a SeaBus runs between them every half hour for EUR 2.

How can a guest check a rental is registered?
