Where to stay in Lanzarote
No base on Lanzarote is far from the airport; the farthest area in this guide is about 35 km away by road. The choice is about the kind of place: a resort, the capital, a surf village or the green north.

How the areas differ
Three of the areas are resort towns. Puerto del Carmen, about 9 km from the airport, has town beaches such as Playa Grande and an old harbour. Playa Blanca, about 30 km away in the south, has town beaches, a marina, the Papagayo coves and the ferry to Fuerteventura. Costa Teguise, north of Arrecife, is the east-coast resort with its own markets.
Arrecife, the capital, sits around the Charco de San Ginés lagoon about 7 km from the airport, with a town beach and services all year. Caleta de Famara is a surf village at the end of Famara beach, about 6 km of sand below the Risco de Famara cliffs. Haría and the north-east coast villages of Arrieta, Punta Mujeres and Órzola are the green, quiet end of the island.
Staying with a rental car
Distances are short. By road the airport is about 7 km from Arrecife, 9 km from Puerto del Carmen, 15 km from Costa Teguise, 25 km from Caleta de Famara, 30 km from Playa Blanca and 35 km from Haría. Famara is reached on the LZ-402 and LZ-410 from the Teguise side, and the LZ-10 climbs from Tahíche to Haría.
Parking information is thin. Arrecife runs a blue zone, but no current tariff was found published online, so read the meter. Órzola, the port for La Graciosa, has a blue zone with resident cards, and the ferry companies run their own car parks. The Papagayo beaches east of Playa Blanca charge EUR 3 per vehicle on an unpaved track, by card or phone only. For Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca and Costa Teguise no official parking source was found, so ask the host whether a space comes with the booking.
Two outings need planning. The Timanfaya visit is sold online only for a set time, and visitors drive their own car to the Islote de Hilario car park. The ferry from Playa Blanca to Corralejo takes about 35 minutes and carries cars, but a hire car usually needs the rental company's authorisation to leave the island. What the tourist tax and registration rules mean for a guest
No accommodation tourist tax in Lanzarote was found as of September 2026. Press reports from July 2026 describe Mogán, in Gran Canaria, as the only Canary municipality with one. No official statement that Lanzarote has none was found, so this is reported, not confirmed.
Holiday homes are regulated by Canary Islands Ley 6/2025, in force since 13 December 2025. The regional register number must be included in any advert, on platforms or elsewhere, and advertising without it is an infringement. The preamble of the law counted 8,815 holiday homes with 39,346 places on Lanzarote on 17 July 2024.
Ley 7/2026, in force since 15 August 2026, added two rules a guest will notice. A residential home let for 31 days or less, or advertised through a tourist channel, is presumed tourist lodging unless shown otherwise, and a lease of that length must state why the tenant needs temporary housing. And a home newly declared for tourist use must say in its advertising when the access road is unpaved or the last stretch has to be walked.
At national level, the national registration procedure was largely annulled in May 2026, regional registers still apply, and whether a national number must still appear on a listing is unsettled as of September 2026. At check-in, every guest over 14 signs a registration form under Real Decreto 933/2021.
When to book what
Book the Timanfaya visit online for a set time before planning the day around it. Teguise holds its market every Sunday from 09:00 to 14:00, with more than 400 stalls in the old town, so arrive early if driving there on a Sunday.
