A month in Lanzarote
Since August 2026 Canary law draws its line at 31 days. A month on Lanzarote is either a stay in a registered holiday home or a seasonal lease that states why the tenant needs temporary housing.

What a month means legally here
Ley 7/2026, published on 14 August 2026 and in force the next day, added two articles to the Canary holiday-home law. Unless shown otherwise, a residential home let for a continuous 31 days or less, or advertised through a tourist channel, is presumed tourist lodging. A lease of that length must state why the tenant needs temporary housing and how that fits the planned length; the landlord must ask, and if the contract leaves it out, the let counts as a tourist let.
A month therefore takes one of two forms. It can be a booking of a holiday home registered in the Canary tourist register, whose number must appear in the advert. Or it can be a seasonal lease, a lease for use other than housing under article 3.2 of the national lease law, with the reason for the temporary stay written into the contract. The national rules on short lets give work, study and medical treatment as examples of temporary reasons.
A month is a temporary stay by any reading: Canary law defines a usual residence as a home occupied for more than 183 days a year.
The areas that suit a month

Arrecife and Costa Teguise suit a month with services close by: Arrecife as the capital, about 7 km from the airport, and Costa Teguise as a resort about 9 km from it. Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca suit a winter month by the beach. Haría and Caleta de Famara suit a slow month for guests who will drive. This ranking is editorial.
No official parking source was found for the resorts, and Arrecife's blue zone tariff was not found online. Ask for a lease or booking with a parking space, and for a rural house in the north, read the listing for the access road: homes newly declared for tourist use must say when it is unpaved or ends on foot.
The paperwork
Deposit: for a seasonal lease the legal cash deposit is two months' rent under article 36.1 of the lease law. A holiday-home booking is not a lease, so the host's or platform's terms apply instead.
ID: every guest over 14 signs a registration form under Real Decreto 933/2021, whatever the length of stay.
EU citizens staying longer than three months must apply in person for registration at the provincial foreigners' office or a police station within three months of entry. Visitors from outside the EU may stay 90 days in any 180-day period in the Schengen area, and the EU Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since 10 April 2026.
Tax: no accommodation tourist tax in Lanzarote was found. Whether the Canary indirect tax, IGIC, is added to a month-long stay was not verified, so ask what the price includes.
What the platforms call long stays
Airbnb calls stays of 28 nights or more monthly stays, charging the first month up front and later months 10 days before each period. Agoda lets properties offer a long-stay promotion on bookings of more than 28 days and accepts stays of up to 90 days.
Under the 31-day rule, a 28 to 31 night booking through a platform is presumed tourist lodging, so the home should carry a Canary register number in its advert. How the rule will be enforced on platform listings was not verified as of September 2026.
Pitfalls
A listing without a Canary register number. Ley 6/2025 requires it in every advert.
A direct lease of 31 days or less that does not state the reason for the temporary stay. Under Ley 7/2026 it counts as a tourist let.
A deposit above two months' rent on a seasonal lease.
A rural house whose listing is silent about an unpaved access road. Ask before booking.
Counting Schengen days wrong: the 90 days in 180 count every day in the Schengen area, not only in Spain.
Questions
Is a one-month rental in Lanzarote a holiday let or a lease?
Either, depending on the contract. Since 15 August 2026 a let of 31 days or less is presumed a tourist let unless the lease states why the tenant needs temporary housing. With that reason in writing, it is a seasonal lease under article 3.2 of the lease law.
How much deposit can a landlord ask for a monthly lease?
For a seasonal lease the legal cash deposit is two months' rent. A holiday-home booking is not a lease, so its own terms apply.
Is there a tourist tax on a month in Lanzarote?
No accommodation tourist tax in Lanzarote was found as of September 2026, based on press reports. Whether IGIC is added to a monthly stay was not verified.
How long can a non-EU visitor stay?
Up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area. The EU Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since 10 April 2026.
Do EU citizens need to register for a long stay?
Only beyond three months: in person at the provincial foreigners' office or a police station, within three months of entry.
