Where to stay in São Miguel, Azores
São Miguel's sights sit at both ends of the island, from the Sete Cidades crater in the west to Furnas in the east. A base in Ponta Delgada keeps the airport close; a second base in the east or on the north coast saves the long drives back.

How the areas differ
Ponta Delgada is the capital, about 4 km by road from the airport. The centre around the Portas da Cidade gives restaurants, churches and the Portas do Mar marina on foot. East of the centre, the São Roque and Livramento seafront has the Milícias and Pópulo beaches.
Ribeira Grande, about 19 km away on the north coast, has the long Santa Bárbara beach and the road up to Lagoa do Fogo. Lagoa and Vila Franca do Campo sit on the south coast, about 9 and 25 km from the capital; Vila Franca faces the crater islet that its club boat serves in summer. Furnas, about 44 km from Ponta Delgada, is the hot-spring valley in the east.
This guide covers São Miguel only. No car ferry serves the island, and the rental terms checked forbid taking the car on a boat without the company's consent, so a trip to another Azores island means a second stay and a second rental there.
Staying with a rental car
In Ponta Delgada, street meters charge EUR 0.05 per 5 minutes, and the city's tourism site warns that they start working at 08:00, so a car parked overnight in a metered space needs a ticket from 08:00. The municipal car parks charge EUR 1.40 for the first hour and EUR 5.75 for two, then EUR 1.00 an hour, with a flat EUR 1.50 at night and on Sundays. The same site lists paid car parks close to most of the city's hotels, among them Castilho, Mercado da Graça, Avenida Infante D. Henrique, Portas do Mar and the Teatro Micaelense, and free car parks around the centre.
Outside the capital, no municipal parking schemes could be confirmed as of September 2026, so a house with its own space is worth asking for. The one road with a rule attached is Lagoa do Fogo: in the summer season the ridge road between Caldeira Velha and Casa da Água is closed to all vehicles except tourism operators, taxis and Azores residents. Drivers leave the car in the free car parks at either end, 101 spaces at Caldeira Velha and 60 at Casa da Água, and take the EUR 5 shuttle. The regional tourism page gives the season as 15 June to 30 September; in 2026 the shuttle started on 1 August.

What the tourist tax and registration rules mean for a guest
Each municipality on São Miguel sets its own tourist tax, and the ones checked set it the same way: EUR 2 per guest per night for at most 3 consecutive nights per establishment, from age 13. Ponta Delgada, Ribeira Grande, Lagoa and Povoação, which includes Furnas, started on 1 January 2025, and Vila Franca do Campo charges the same. Ponta Delgada exempts Azores residents, guests with a physical incapacity of 60% or more and stays for medical treatment, and charges EUR 1 in campsites. A stay split between two hotels pays the 3 nights twice, since the cap counts per establishment.
Holiday lets follow regional rules. Under Portaria 83/2016, the regional tourism directorate assigns each Alojamento Local a registration number, and the owner must show it in all advertising, next to the words Alojamento Local or AL. A listing without that number deserves a question before paying.
At check-in, the host or hotel records a passport or ID card, because Portuguese law requires a registration form for every foreign guest, EU nationals included.
When to book what
Decide the order of the island first. A trip that starts in Ponta Delgada and ends with two or three nights in Furnas or Ribeira Grande avoids driving the length of the island twice.
For a summer visit to Lagoa do Fogo, buy the shuttle ticket online at lagoadofogo.pt or at the island outlets that sell it, and pick the car park at the end nearer the base.
