A month in São Miguel, Azores

A month in a registered Alojamento Local is still an AL stay. In the Azores the register is regional: the regional tourism directorate assigns the number, and the owner shows it in every advert. The tourist tax stops after 3 consecutive nights per establishment, so the tax on a month in one place is EUR 6 per guest aged 13 or over in Ponta Delgada, Ribeira Grande, Lagoa, Povoação or Vila Franca do Campo.

A lease is the other route, under the national Civil Code. A fixed-term residential lease runs at least a year, but that minimum does not apply to contracts for special transitory purposes such as work, study or tourism, as long as the purpose is written into the contract. Only one transitory lease for tourist purposes may be signed per unit per calendar year.

Ponta Delgada centre suits a month with the car used only some days: shops and restaurants are on foot, and the municipal car parks sell a monthly ticket for EUR 33.40 under the 2026 fee table. São Roque and Livramento, about 3 km east, put the Milícias and Pópulo beaches outside the door.

Ribeira Grande and Lagoa suit a quieter month in a town, about 19 and 9 km from the capital, with the Lagoa do Fogo road between them. Vila Franca do Campo, about 25 km from the capital, suits a month by the sea, with the Vinha da Areia beach under 1 km from the town and the islet boat in summer. Furnas is better for a few nights than for a month, because it sits about 44 km from Ponta Delgada. This ranking is editorial.

Deposit: on a lease, the deposit may not exceed two months' rent, and rent may be paid in advance for no more than two months, with written agreement. A platform booking is not a lease, so the platform's terms apply instead.

Registration at the lodging: the host or hotel files a registration form for every foreign guest, EU nationals included.

EU, EEA and Swiss citizens staying longer than three months request a Certificado de Registo from the Câmara Municipal where they live, within 30 days after the first three months.

Visitors from outside the EU may stay 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area, which includes the Azores; longer stays need a national visa. The EU Entry/Exit System, which registers non-EU nationals on short stays in 29 European countries, has been in full operation since 10 April 2026.

Airbnb calls a reservation of 28 nights or more a monthly stay. It charges the first month up front and releases it to the host 24 hours after check-in, then charges each later month 10 days in advance at the price fixed at booking. A long-term cancellation policy applies to these stays, and Airbnb's help page describes a 30-day notice for changes.

The legal status comes from the listing, whatever the platform calls it: a regional AL number means an AL stay, and a direct contract for a transitory purpose means a lease.

Leaving the car at a Ponta Delgada meter overnight. The meters start at 08:00, and a month of street parking means a daily ticket; the municipal monthly ticket costs EUR 33.40.

Planning to take the car to another island. No car ferry serves São Miguel, and the rental terms checked forbid it without consent.

Counting on driving up to Lagoa do Fogo in a summer month. From 15 June to 30 September, per the regional tourism page, the ridge road closes to visitors' cars, and the shuttle from Caldeira Velha or Casa da Água replaces it.
