About Azores

São Miguel is the Azores island with the main airport, about 4 km by road from Ponta Delgada. No car ferry serves it, so the stay and the car both belong to this island, and the base decides how far the drives to the craters and hot springs run.

Ponta Delgada centre

The island capital around the Portas da Cidade: churches, restaurants and the Portas do Mar marina on foot, with the airport a few minutes away. It suits a first visit and short stays, and anyone who wants evenings without the car.

Car and parking

Street meters charge EUR 0.05 per 5 minutes from 08:00, so a car left overnight in a metered space needs paying from 08:00. Municipal car parks charge EUR 1.40 for the first hour and a flat EUR 1.50 at night and on Sundays. The city's tourism site lists paid car parks near most hotels, among them Castilho, Mercado da Graça and Portas do Mar.

São Roque and Livramento seafront, Ponta Delgada

The seafront parishes east of the centre, with the Milícias beach in São Roque and the Pópulo beach next door in Livramento. It suits beach days close to the city and a longer stay in an apartment.

Car and parking

Both parishes belong to Ponta Delgada municipality, but no parking scheme for their seafront could be confirmed as of September 2026. Ask the host whether a space comes with the apartment.

Ribeira Grande

The north coast town, with the long Santa Bárbara beach and the northern end of the Lagoa do Fogo road. It suits beach days, walkers and a quieter base about 19 km from the capital.

Car and parking

In the summer season the Lagoa do Fogo road closes to visitors' cars. The free Caldeira Velha car park at the Ribeira Grande end has 101 spaces, and a EUR 5 shuttle leaves from there. No municipal parking scheme could be confirmed.

Lagoa

A south-coast town between Ponta Delgada and Vila Franca do Campo, at the southern end of the Lagoa do Fogo road. It suits a calm base with short drives in both directions.

Car and parking

The free Casa da Água car park, 60 spaces, is the southern shuttle stop for Lagoa do Fogo when the ridge road is closed in summer. No municipal parking scheme could be confirmed as of September 2026.

Vila Franca do Campo

The south-coast town facing the crater islet, with a marina and the Vinha da Areia beach. It suits beach and boat days and a base halfway to Furnas.

The town is about 25 km from Ponta Delgada by road. No municipal parking scheme could be confirmed as of September 2026, so ask the host where the car stays.

Furnas

The hot-spring valley in the east, with thermal pools, gardens and the lake. It suits two or three nights for the springs, and it is the longest airport run on this list.

At the lake, the Povoação council charges non-residents EUR 3 each to enter the lake-shore area, where parking is free. No village parking scheme could be confirmed.
