Where to stay in Verona
Verona keeps visitors' cars out of the Adige loop unless the hotel or B&B inside it registers the plate. In the quarters across the river and around the station, the car is easier to park and the Arena stays a walk away.

How the areas differ
The Città Antica fills the loop of the Adige: Piazza Bra and the Arena, Piazza delle Erbe and the shopping streets between them. It suits a first visit and evenings at the Arena, and it is the zone that visitors' cars cannot enter. San Zeno, west of Castelvecchio, gathers around its basilica and quieter squares.
Across the river, Veronetta holds the university streets, Castel San Pietro and the Giardino Giusti, with the old centre a bridge away. Borgo Trento, on the north bank, is residential and calm. Porta Nuova, around the station, is the practical base for trains and the airport bus.
Lazise, a walled town on the east shore of Lake Garda, is a separate comune about 22 km from Piazza Bra in a straight line. With a car it combines lake days with trips into Verona.
Staying with a rental car
The ZTL covers the inner loop of the Adige from the Ponte Scaligero at Castelvecchio round to the Ponte Aleardi, with Piazza Bra, Via Roma and Corso Castelvecchio, and cameras at eleven gates photograph every plate. Since 28 October 2024 only people who live in Verona and its province can book an entry. Guests of hotels and complementary lodgings such as B&Bs inside the zone may drive in once the host passes on the plate; the city states that tourist rentals do not qualify.
Street parking costs less outside the loop. Inside the ZTL, blue bays cost EUR 2 an hour every day from 08:00 to 24:00. In San Zeno, Veronetta, Cittadella and Pindemonte they cost EUR 1 an hour on weekdays from 08:00 to 20:00 and nothing at night or on Sundays, with a two-hour limit on some streets such as Via XX Settembre. Borgo Trento charges EUR 1 to EUR 2 an hour every day.
The municipal garages run by AMT3 suit longer stays: the Parcheggio Centro on Via Campo Marzo, near the Arena, at EUR 1 an hour or EUR 10 for 24 hours; the Stazione Est and Ovest garages by Porta Nuova at EUR 1.50 an hour or EUR 15 for 24 hours, with the first 30 minutes free; and Porta Vescovo at EUR 5 for 24 hours. What the tourist tax and registration rules mean for a guest
Verona charges the imposta di soggiorno per person per night, for at most four nights a month, and the host collects it with the stay. Hotels charge EUR 1.50 to EUR 5.00 from one to five stars; B&Bs, guest rooms, furnished tourist flats and holiday houses classed by winged lions EUR 2.00 to EUR 5.00; tourist rentals, which carry no classification, EUR 3.50. Children pay nothing until their fifteenth birthday. Guests over 70, young people from 15 to 25 and members of groups of more than 25 pay 20 percent less, and the reductions do not add up.
These rates date from 1 July 2024, set by Giunta resolution 422 of 19 April 2024, and the city confirmed them for 2026. The same year the city council cut the maximum from five nights to four. Lazise, on the lake, sets its own tax under its own acts, most recently in March 2026, so ask the host there for the rate.
Every licensed stay in Italy, hotel or short-let flat, carries the national CIN outside the building and in every listing. At check-in each guest shows an ID card or passport, which the host registers with the police within 24 hours, and a 2024 Interior Ministry circular, upheld by the Council of State in November 2025, requires the host to verify each guest in person or by a video link at the door.
When to book what
With a car, book a hotel or B&B inside the ZTL only if it confirms that it registers guests' plates, and plan on a garage for a tourist rental in the old centre. The street bays of San Zeno and Veronetta are free at night and on Sundays, while those of Borgo Trento are paid every day.
For a week or more, the four-night monthly cap keeps the tax down. For an early flight, a night near Porta Nuova puts the Airlink bus a few steps away, with departures every 20 minutes and a 15-minute ride.
