A month in Trapani
A month in one Trapani flat pays tourist tax on five nights only, and stays from 21 to 31 January pay none from 2026. The rest of a long stay turns on the 30 day line in Italian lease law.

What a month means legally
Up to 30 days a whole flat let by a private owner is a locazione breve under article 4 of Decree-Law 50/2017, cleaning and linen included, booked directly or through a portal. Beyond 30 days in total in the year, the lease must be registered with the Agenzia delle Entrate within 30 days of signing or of the start date, whichever is earlier, and an unregistered lease is void under Law 311/2004. Landlord and tenant are jointly liable for the registration tax.
A holiday month is a tourist let under the Civil Code, which Law 431/1998 keeps outside most of the ordinary lease rules while still requiring written form. For a documented work or study need there is the transitory lease, up to 18 months on the standard form of the ministerial decree of 16 January 2017. A residential deposit may not exceed three months' rent under Law 392/1978; whether that cap binds a tourist let under the Civil Code is not settled in the texts read.
The tax on a month
Trapani charges the imposta di soggiorno on at most five consecutive nights in the same lodging. A month in a holiday flat of cadastral category A/3 to A/6, at EUR 2.50 per person per night, therefore costs EUR 12.50 per person in tax; in a B&B or a flat of category A/2 at EUR 3.00 it costs EUR 15.00, and in a five star hotel at EUR 4.50 it costs EUR 22.50.
The cap counts nights in one lodging, so a month split between two flats pays the five nights twice. From 2026 the comune exempts stays from 21 to 31 January altogether, under council deliberation 160 of 13 December 2024. Whether that deliberation also changed the five night cap could not be confirmed, because the regulation the comune links is the 2023 text. Children under 10 are exempt, and the guest pays the host by departure.
Areas that suit a month

The centro storico, the port side and the Tramontana seafront are all inside the comune of Trapani, about 2 km apart by road, with the ferry terminal on the quay. Inside the old town, the ZTL hours in force are unverified as of September 2026, so a month there works best in a flat that can show where the car will sleep.
For parking by the month, no subscription open to visitors was found. ATM sells a residents' pass at EUR 5.00 a year, which a guest cannot use, so a visitor pays the hourly rate in the blue bays, Monday to Saturday, and from 1 June to 30 September every day until midnight in the historic-centre streets. Erice is harder to run a month from with a car, because guests' own cars are not on the list of vehicles allowed into its ZTLs, and the Egadi islands are reached by hydrofoil.
Paperwork and entry limits
EU citizens may stay three months without formalities; past that they register with the comune's registry office, and Italian law requires registration once three months from entry have passed. Non-EU visitors, UK and US passport holders included, have 90 days in any 180 across the whole Schengen area, and since 10 April 2026 the EU Entry/Exit System has registered those short stays at the external border. A non-EU visitor arriving from another Schengen country rather than from outside declares presence to the questore within eight days; whether a host's police registration covers that declaration is not settled in the sources read.
Whatever the length, the host may accept only guests carrying an identity document or passport and registers each one with the police within 24 hours. The 2024 Interior Ministry circular, upheld by the Council of State in November 2025, requires the host to identify the guest in person or by a video link at the door.
What the platforms call a long stay
Airbnb calls 28 nights or more a monthly stay. It charges the first month up front and releases it to the host 24 hours after check-in, then charges each later month 10 days before that period starts. How other platforms label long stays in Trapani is unverified as of September 2026.
A listing that cannot show a Sicilian CIR and a national CIN is worth questioning before any deposit. The region requires the CIR in every advert and booking, from hosts, agents and portals alike, with a penalty of EUR 500 to 5,000.
Pitfalls
Expecting the tourist tax to run all month. It stops after five consecutive nights in the same lodging.
Moving flats halfway through. The cap restarts in each lodging.
Signing a month without registration. Over 30 days in the year the lease must be registered within 30 days, and an unregistered lease is void.
Taking an old-town flat without asking about the car. The ZTL hours are not published, and the luggage authorisation in the 2020 ordinance is for loading and unloading only.
Counting Schengen days only in Italy. The 90 days in any 180 run across the whole area, and the Entry/Exit System now records the crossings.

At 30 days. Beyond 30 days in the year the lease must be registered with the Agenzia delle Entrate within 30 days, and an unregistered lease is void.
