Where to stay in Timișoara

Timișoara prices its streets by colour, from RON 4.07 an hour in the green zone around Cetate to RON 1.02 in the blue zone, and charges nothing on Sundays. The historic districts around Cetate sit in the cheaper yellow zone.

How the areas differ

Cetate is the old fortress town. Visit Timișoara describes its well-preserved fortifications and Baroque squares, and its rise as a Habsburg stronghold after the city was taken from Ottoman rule in 1716. Piața Unirii and Piața Victoriei lie inside it, about 2 km apart by road.

Fabric, about 4 km by road from Piața Unirii, developed independently and, with Cetate, stands as an example of Baroque urbanism; Cetate and Fabric stood together in the 2025 candidacy for the European Heritage Label with Osijek and Alba Iulia. Iosefin, about 3 km away on the Bega, has the water tower built in 1913 and 1914, 52 m high and reopened to the public after restoration, the twin of a tower in Fabric. Timișoara Nord station lies in Iosefin. Elisabetin, south of Cetate around Piața Nicolae Bălcescu, is the third of the historical neighbourhoods with its own guided tour.

Timpark, the city's parking service, splits the streets into four colours. In 2026, by voucher or bank card, the green zone 0 costs RON 4.07 an hour, the red zone 1 RON 2.03, the yellow zone 2 RON 1.52 and the blue zone 3 RON 1.02. Some green streets pay a progressive tariff: RON 4.50 for the first hour, RON 5.51 for the second, RON 6.50 for the third and RON 7.50 from the fourth. By SMS to 7406 the tariffs are set in euro, EUR 0.91 an hour in the green zone, and the mobile operator charges the equivalent in lei at its own rate. A missing confirmation message means the parking is unpaid.

The red, yellow and blue zones are charged Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 20:00, and Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays are free. The green zone is also charged on Saturdays from 08:00 to 17:00. On Timpark's 2025 street list Bulevardul Regele Ferdinand in Cetate is green, while Piața Traian and Piața Romanilor in Fabric, Piața Alexandru Mocioni in Iosefin and Piața Nicolae Bălcescu in Elisabetin are yellow. Car access to Piața Unirii and Piața Victoriei was not verified.

The barrier car parks, under rules posted in 2022, open around the clock, charge by 60-minute units at the machine, take no SMS or subscriptions, hold a car for at most 5 days and charge RON 100 for a lost token. Unlocking a clamped wheel costs RON 145.20 under the 2026 tariffs. On national roads outside the city the rovinieta vignette is required; whether a rental car carries one was not verified as of October 2026, so ask at the desk. Cars can be compared on GetCar's car rental page for Timișoara.

Tourist tax and registration for a guest

Council decision 719 of 29 December 2025 sets the tax for tourism promotion for 2026 at 2% of the accommodation tariff, without VAT. The regulation charges it to the guest for each day of the stay and for the whole period of accommodation, and the accommodation withholds it and pays it to the city by the 10th of the next month. It applies in hotels, guesthouses and hostels and in apartments and rooms let for tourism.

Romanian tourism law lets operators use only classified accommodation. Ministry order 948 of 2026 has private hosts apply online, with the consent of the neighbours who share walls with the flat, and caps them at 7 rooms or 14 places. A host who cannot show a classification certificate is worth questioning before a deposit.

When to book what

In the red, yellow and blue zones a car parks for free from 20:00 on Friday to 08:00 on Monday, and in the green zone from 17:00 on Saturday. Express bus E4 runs from Traian Vuia airport to the city centre and E4b to the central station; the airport sits about 16 km by road from Piața Unirii.

Romania has been a full Schengen member since 1 January 2025. UK and other visa-exempt visitors arriving from outside Schengen pass through the EU Entry/Exit System, fully operational since 10 April 2026. Compare and book on this page once the dates are set.
