What a month means legally

UK and other visa-exempt visitors may stay 90 days in any 180 across the Schengen area, which Romania joined in full on 1 January 2025, so a month uses 30 of those days, together with any other Schengen days in the 180 before. The EU Entry/Exit System has registered non-EU visitors at the external border since it became fully operational on 10 April 2026.

EU, EEA and Swiss citizens need no visa and register their residence with the General Inspectorate for Immigration only for stays of more than 3 months, according to its guidance posted in 2021.

The tax on a month

The regulation attached to council decision 719/2025 charges 2% of the accommodation tariff, without VAT, for each day of the stay and states that the tax is owed for the whole period of accommodation. It names apartments and rooms let for tourism among the accommodation it covers, and lists no long-stay exemption.

The accommodation withholds the tax. Whether a month in a private flat under a residential lease counts as tourist accommodation for this tax was not verified as of October 2026; ask the landlord before signing.

Classification and paperwork

Romanian tourism law lets operators use only classified accommodation, and the classification norms count apartments and rooms to let in family homes as one of the types. Under ministry order 948 of 2026 a private host applies online with the written consent of the neighbours who share walls with the flat, and may classify at most 7 rooms or 14 places. Asking for the certificate before a deposit is a fair check.

Timpark sells zone subscriptions priced for 21 working days: RON 42.63 for the red zone 1, RON 34.02 for the yellow zone 2, RON 25.62 for the blue zone 3 and RON 61.53 for all three together. The subscriptions on the 2026 tariff sheet cover the red, yellow and blue zones; check the zone of the flat's street before booking. Resident subscriptions exist as well, from RON 72.50 to RON 112.50 a year; whether a visitor qualifies was not verified.

Fabric, Iosefin and Elisabetin suit a month with a car. Their squares on Timpark's 2025 street list, Piața Traian, Piața Romanilor, Piața Alexandru Mocioni and Piața Nicolae Bălcescu, are all yellow zone 2, about 3 to 4 km by road from Piața Unirii. Weekends in those zones cost nothing, since the yellow zone is charged only on weekdays from 08:00 to 20:00.

What the platforms call a long stay

Airbnb calls 28 nights or more a monthly stay. It charges the first month up front, holds it until 24 hours after check-in, and charges each later month 10 days before it starts. How other platforms label long stays in Timișoara was not verified as of October 2026.

Pitfalls

Counting Schengen days only in Romania. The 90 days in 180 run across the whole area.
