Where to stay in Skopje

Skopje's centre sits on both banks of the Vardar, joined by the Stone Bridge. The parking zone on the street, A, B, C or D, sets the hourly rate, and a 30-hour guest card covers a weekend with a car.

How the areas differ

Macedonia Square lies at the south end of the Stone Bridge, with the warrior on horseback statue, hotels on its edges and the Vardar quay beside it. Across the bridge, on the eastern bank, the Old Bazaar stretches to Bit-Pazar and up to the fortress. The tourism portal calls it the largest bazaar in the Balkans outside Istanbul; its merchant quarter is documented from the 12th century, and its Ottoman mosques, caravanserais and hans make it a protected national landmark.

Debar Maalo is a neighbourhood of the Centar municipality about 1 km west of the square. Aerodrom, about 3 km by road to the south-east, is a separate municipality, with tall residential towers by the Macedonian Cross. All four sit about 22 to 23 km by road from the airport.

The city company Gradski parking runs the zones and its own car parks and garages. On zoned streets zone A costs MKD 40 an hour, zone B MKD 30, and zones C and D MKD 25; its public car parks charge MKD 40 in zones A and B and MKD 30 in C and D. Zone A0 charges MKD 75 for the first hour and MKD 50 after. A car without a valid ticket, or past its limit, gets a surcharge ticket of MKD 990.

For visitors the company sells a guest card: MKD 450 for 30 hours in zones A and B, MKD 300 for 30 hours in zones C and D. Its multi-storey garages Beko and 26 Juli charge MKD 30 an hour and MKD 2,000 a month. From 1 October 2026 zones A, B and C are charged Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 21:00 and on Saturdays from 07:00 to 14:00, and zone D Monday to Saturday from 07:00 to 23:00.

The payment system's page, dated 2023, gives zone A a 2-hour limit and zone B 4 hours, lists SMS payment to 144144, and says the City of Skopje doubles the hourly price on days of high air pollution. Read the sign in the zone for the code and the price before paying. GetCar's car rental page for Skopje compares cars to hire for the trip.

Motorways are tolled at stations, in denars or euros, by bank card or with a TAG device: a car pays MKD 40 from Skopje to Tetovo, MKD 40 to Petrovec and MKD 60 from Miladinovci to Kumanovo. UK advice reminds drivers to use dipped headlights in daytime and to carry snow chains where conditions require them; rental firms often ask for two years' driving experience and a higher minimum age.

Tourist tax and registration for a guest

The Law on the Fee for Temporary Stay charges MKD 40 per person per day, in hotels and also in houses, flats and rooms let to visitors. The text read was last amended in 2020, and no 2026 confirmation was found. The host collects the fee with the bill for the stay and must show it separately. Its exemptions, for under-18s among others, are written for citizens of North Macedonia; foreign guests are exempt only where an international agreement says so. In Skopje, 80 per cent goes to the City and 20 per cent to the state budget.

Every foreign guest is registered with the Ministry of Interior. Hotels and hosts who rent for payment report the stay within 12 hours of providing it, and the ministry offers online registration. A friend or relative who hosts a foreigner reports within 48 hours of arrival at the police station for the address. UK advice tells travellers to keep the registration document during the stay, and anyone who registers in person to de-register 24 hours before leaving.

When to book what

North Macedonia is outside the EU and Schengen. EU citizens enter without a visa, also with an ID card, and UK citizens may visit for up to 3 months without one; the rules for US passports were not verified as of September 2026. Days in North Macedonia do not count toward the Schengen 90.

For a short stay on foot, book around Macedonia Square or the Old Bazaar. With a car for several days, Debar Maalo or Aerodrom keeps street parking at MKD 25 an hour. Compare prices on this page and check what the host says about parking before booking.
