What a month means legally
North Macedonia is outside the EU and the Schengen area. EU citizens need no visa and may enter with an ID card, though the Ministry of Foreign Affairs page does not state a maximum stay for them. UK citizens may visit for up to 3 months without a visa, with a passport valid at least 90 days after arrival. Rules for US passports were not verified as of September 2026. A month here does not use Schengen days.
The Law on Foreigners has applied since 5 June 2019. A host who rents for payment reports the foreigner's stay to the Ministry of Interior within 12 hours of providing it. A foreigner who stays with a friend or relative is reported within 48 hours of arrival, at the police station for the address. For the arrival, the airport shuttle bus costs MKD 199 one way, and Airport Taxi, the only company authorised at the terminal, works to a price list applicable since 9 February 2024.
The tax on a month
The Law on the Fee for Temporary Stay charges MKD 40 per person per day, and it applies in houses, flats and rooms let to visitors as well as in hotels. The law has no exemption for long stays. Its exemptions, such as those for under-18s, students on school trips and people under medical treatment, are written for citizens of North Macedonia, and foreigners are exempt only under an international agreement. Thirty days come to MKD 1,200 per person.
The text read was last amended in 2020 and archived in January 2026, and no 2026 confirmation was found. The host collects the fee with the bill and must show the amount separately, and a host who does not faces a fine.
Registration and paperwork
Ask the host for proof that the stay has been registered, and keep the registration document for the length of the stay, as UK advice recommends. Failure to register can lead to fines, detention or restrictions on returning. A traveller who registers in person with the police must de-register 24 hours before leaving.
The ministry offers online registration on its website, so a host who says registration is impossible is worth questioning before a deposit is paid.
The areas and the parking that suit a month

Gradski parking sells monthly passes to natural and legal persons; whether a foreign-plated rental car qualifies was not verified as of September 2026. For one car park a month costs MKD 4,000 in zone A, MKD 3,000 in B, MKD 2,000 in C and MKD 1,000 in D; for a whole zone MKD 4,500, MKD 3,500, MKD 2,500 and MKD 1,500. The Beko and 26 Juli garages charge MKD 2,000 a month.
Debar Maalo, about 1 km west of Macedonia Square, has zone C sections on Orce Nikolov and Leninova, so a whole-zone pass costs MKD 2,500 a month. Aerodrom, about 3 km by road from the square, has zone D sections, charged Monday to Saturday from 07:00 to 23:00, and a whole-zone pass at MKD 1,500. The Old Bazaar and Centar suit a month on foot, with zone A and B streets that limited a car to 2 and 4 hours on the 2023 payment page.
What the platforms call a long stay
Airbnb calls 28 nights or more a monthly stay. It charges the first month up front and releases it to the host 24 hours after check-in, then charges each later month 10 days before it starts. How other platforms label long stays in Skopje was not verified as of September 2026.
Pitfalls
Expecting a child discount on the tourist fee. The law's exemptions are written for citizens of North Macedonia.
Assuming the registration is done. Ask the host for proof and keep the document.
Leaving the car on a zone A or B street. The 2023 limits are 2 and 4 hours, and a surcharge ticket costs MKD 990.
Parking on a high pollution day without checking. The payment system's 2023 page says the city doubles the hourly price on those days.
