Where to stay in Salerno
Salerno publishes its parking street by street, with six automated car parks and monthly subscriptions. The areas below differ in what that parking costs and how far each sits from the old town.

How the areas differ
The Centro Storico is the medieval core around the Duomo, tight and walkable. Lungomare Trieste runs below it along the water, palms on one side and the Villa Comunale gardens at its western end.
West again is the port, where the coast ferries leave from the Molo Manfredi. Inland from the seafront, the grid around Piazza della Concordia reaches Salerno Centrale station and holds most of the covered parking.
Torrione and Mercatello are the residential east, strung along Via Posidonia towards the Stadio Arechi and the longer beaches, about 3 km from the old town.
Staying with a rental car

Salerno Mobilita, the comune's own company, runs the street bays and the car parks. Most zones charge EUR 1.00 an hour, divisible from the second hour, 08:00 to 21:00 every day except Sundays and holidays. The central and seafront streets cost more and run later: Via Roma, Piazza Matteo Luciani, Via Stanislao Lista, Via Indipendenza, Via Benedetto Croce, Via Porta di Mare and the Lungomare Trieste stretch between Piazza Umberto I and Piazza Cavour charge EUR 0.80 for the first 30 minutes and EUR 2.00 each hour after that, from 08:00 to 03:00 every day. Piazza Giovanni Amendola is paid only, at EUR 2.50 an hour.
Off the street, six automated car parks hold 1,516 cars between them, led by Via S. Robertelli with 448, Piazza della Concordia with 260 and its Sottopiazza with 220. Ten unautomated areas hold 2,717 more, including the Stadio Arechi with 1,350 and Via A. Carella with 260. The company notes that Salerno has 41.4 paid street bays per 1,000 circulating cars against an Italian provincial-capital average of 51.3, and blames the shape of the old town and the terrain.
The city has limited-traffic zones, confirmed by the fact that an electric-car permit from the same company grants access to them along with free parking in every area it manages. Their streets and hours are unverified as of September 2026, because the comune's own site does not answer this server. Treat the old town as a place to walk and leave the car in a car park. For the car itself, GetCar's car rental page for Salerno is the place to start.
The coast road and the boats
The SS163 Amalfitana begins at Vietri sul Mare, about 4 km from the Duomo, and runs roughly 40 km to Positano through Cetara, Maiori, Minori, Ravello, Atrani, Amalfi, Conca dei Marini, Furore and Praiano. On the days the rule applies it runs alternating plates from 10:00 to 18:00: cars whose plate ends in an even digit may not drive it on even dates, odd ones on odd dates. No other road in the area is covered, and two-wheelers are exempt.
In 2026 the rule applies every day from 30 March to 6 April, every day from 25 April to 2 May, at weekends and on holidays from 1 June to 31 July, every day through August and September, and at weekends in October up to Saturday 31 October. Guests of hotels and other accommodation who hold a booking are exempt only for the journeys needed to arrive on the check-in day and leave on the check-out day; every other drive follows the rule.
The alternative is the water. Travelmar runs fast ferries from Salerno to Vietri sul Mare, Cetara, Maiori, Minori, Amalfi, Atrani, Praiano and Positano, and lists the service as available all year. Its own pitch is avoiding the car queues and the parking. Paestum, in the other direction, is about 51 km by road and has no plate rule.
What the tourist tax and registration rules mean for a guest
Salerno charges an imposta di soggiorno per person per night. From 1 June 2026, under resolution 50 of 8 April 2026, it is EUR 5.00 in a 4 or 5 star hotel, EUR 4.00 in a 1, 2 or 3 star hotel, an agriturismo or a residenza turistica alberghiera, and EUR 3.00 in a B&B, a holiday house or flat, an affittacamere, a casa per ferie, a campsite or a short let. The same rates apply across the whole year, and the tax stops after 7 consecutive nights.
Exemptions include residents, children under 12, hostel guests, accommodation staff, day-hospital patients, up to two carers per patient, students enrolled at the University of Salerno who are staying to study or do research, and people with severe certified disability. The host collects the tax, issues a receipt and pays the comune through its Tourist Tax portal; the comune states it has no agreement with Airbnb for collecting it.
Every licensed stay in Italy, hotel or short-let flat, carries a national identification code (CIN), shown outside the building and in every listing, and Salerno adds a CUSR code for short lets through its SUAP office. A host may accept only guests with an identity document or passport and registers each one with the police within 24 hours. A 2024 Interior Ministry circular, upheld by the Council of State in November 2025, requires identification in person or by a video link at the door.
When to book what
The tax rose on 1 June 2026, so nights from that date carry the higher rates; the EUR 5.00 top band sits at the ordinary national ceiling rather than on a temporary allowance.
The coast road rule follows the calendar. Easter week, the late-April bridge, every weekend from June, and then all of August and September are plate days; the back half of October is clear except at weekends, and the winter is clear altogether.
The Lungomare and Via Roma bays run until 03:00, so an evening arrival pays there while the EUR 1.00 zones have stopped at 21:00.
Which area for which trip
A first visit on foot: the Centro Storico.
The sea at the door: Lungomare Trieste.
Boats to the coast rather than the road: the port and Molo Manfredi.
Arriving by train, or wanting the car covered: Piazza della Concordia and the station quarter.
A longer stay with a car: Torrione and Mercatello.
Questions
Is Salerno a good base for the Amalfi Coast with a car?
It is the base with parking, and the ferries leave from the Molo Manfredi. The coast road itself is restricted by plate from 10:00 to 18:00 on the dates listed for 2026, and a booking on the coast exempts only the arrival and departure days.
Where can a car stay overnight in Salerno?
In one of the six automated car parks, which hold 1,516 cars between them. Piazza della Concordia and its Sottopiazza are the central pair; Foce Irno and Via S. Robertelli are the larger ones further out.
How much tourist tax does a family pay in a Salerno flat?
EUR 3.00 per person per night in a short-let flat from 1 June 2026, for each guest aged 12 or over, for at most 7 consecutive nights.
Does Salerno have a limited-traffic zone?
Salerno Mobilita states that its electric-car permit grants access to the ZTLs, so zones exist. Their streets and hours are unverified as of September 2026, because the comune site does not answer, so plan on parking outside the old town.
How far is Amalfi from Salerno?
About 24 km by road from the Duomo, along the SS163 through Vietri, Cetara, Maiori and Minori. Travelmar also serves Amalfi by fast ferry from Salerno.
