Areas of Paris

Le Marais

The 3rd and the 4th arrondissements, built around the Place des Vosges and its brick and stone pavilions, which stand on the boundary between the two. It is dense and walkable, a short way from the river, and it suits a first visit made on foot rather than by car.

Car and parking

City zone 1, the 1st to the 11th arrondissement, so a light car pays EUR 6 an hour and EUR 75 for the six-hour maximum on one space, and the unpaid-parking charge is EUR 75. A rental over 1.6 tonnes pays EUR 18 an hour and EUR 225 for six hours.

Saint-Germain-des-Prés and the Latin Quarter

The left bank in the 5th and the 6th, around the place Saint-Germain-des-Prés at the foot of the rue Bonaparte, where cars stand on the cobbles between the cafés and the Haussmann fronts. It suits travellers who want the river and the museums within a few minutes on foot.

Car and parking

City zone 1: EUR 6 an hour for a light car, EUR 75 for six hours, and the same EUR 75 if the meter goes unpaid. Street bays allow six consecutive hours at most, so a car left overnight needs a car park.

Louvre, Opéra and the Grands Boulevards

The 1st, the 2nd and the 9th, around the Palais Garnier with its green dome and gilded figures, the department stores and the wide boulevards behind them. It suits a short stay built around museums, theatres and shops.

Car and parking

City zone 1 again, EUR 6 an hour and EUR 75 for six hours. None of the four city car parks that sell a subscription to any Paris resident is in this quarter, so an overnight car goes to an operator at its own tariff.

Montmartre

The 18th, on the hill under the Sacré-Cœur, whose terrace looks out over the roofs of the whole city. The streets are steep and narrow and the basilica draws crowds all day, so it suits people who will walk and who want the view from their own doorstep.

Car and parking

City zone 2, the 12th to the 20th arrondissement, so a light car pays EUR 4 an hour and EUR 50 for six hours, with a EUR 50 charge if the meter goes unpaid. The hill itself is the problem rather than the price.

Canal Saint-Martin, République and Bastille

The 10th and the 11th, along the canal between the quai de Valmy and the quai de Jemmapes, with plane trees on both banks and people sitting on the stone edge. It suits a longer stay among residents, with the centre a short ride away.

Car and parking

City zone 1, EUR 6 an hour and EUR 75 for six hours. The quays either side of the canal are narrow and one-way in places, so a car park is worth booking with the flat.

Montparnasse and the 15th

The south-west of the city, the closest of these six to Orly by road and the cheapest for a car on the street. It suits a trip that starts or ends with a flight from Orly, and a stay of several weeks.

City zone 2: EUR 4 an hour, EUR 50 for the six-hour maximum and a EUR 50 charge if the meter goes unpaid. Of the four city car parks that sell a resident subscription to anyone living in Paris, Porte d'Orléans is in the 14th and two more, Watt and Université Diderot, are in the neighbouring 13th.
