How the areas differ
Palanga is a resort city on the Baltic shore in western Lithuania, home to 18,551 people in January 2025. Its centre is J. Basanavičiaus street, a pedestrian street that ends at Palanga Pier, a wooden pier out into the sea. To the south, Birutė Park surrounds the restored 19th-century Tiškevičiai Palace, now the Palanga Amber Museum, a branch of the Lithuanian National Museum of Art that holds about 28,000 pieces of amber, about 15,000 of them with insects, spiders or plants inside. The Palanga Botanical Garden lies around it.
Further south, Nemirseta, a district of Palanga on the coast north of Klaipėda, marked the northernmost point of Prussia for about five centuries and the northeastern tip of the German Empire from 1871 to 1920. Šventoji, a resort town in the same municipality, lies about 12 km north of the centre in a straight line near the Latvian border, where the Šventoji River flows into the sea; its lighthouse stands 39 metres high, 780 metres from the shore.
Staying with a rental car

The title of a municipal notice of unknown year announces a local fee for parking in designated paid places in the resort. The 2026 zones, prices, hours and season were unverified as of September 2026. Before booking near the pier, ask the host whether a parking space comes with the room.
The airport is close: Palanga International Airport, a regional airport serving Palanga, Klaipėda, parts of Samogitia and western Latvia, lies about 7 km by road from J. Basanavičiaus street and about 8 km from Šventoji, which is about 17 km from the pier by road. Nemirseta, at the southern end, is about 11 km from the terminal and about 5 km from the pier. GetCar's car rental page for Palanga compares cars for the trip.
Driving to Nida and the Curonian Spit
A day on the Curonian Spit means paying Neringa municipality's fee for entering its protected territory by car, set by council decision No. T1-92 of 21 April 2016. On the municipality's page dated 27 May 2025, a passenger car pays EUR 50 per entry from 20 June to 20 August and EUR 10 from 21 August to 19 June; a purely electric vehicle pays EUR 25 in the summer period. No 2026 confirmation of these amounts was found. The fee can be paid in advance through the UNIPARK entry ticket system.
Tax and registration for a guest
Palanga has collected a local fee for the use of its tourism and leisure infrastructure since 2012. Under council decision No. T2-5 of 25 January 2018, as amended, it is EUR 2 per person for each night, according to the municipality's notice of 2025; no 2026 confirmation was found. Everyone staying in a hotel, sanatorium or private let pays it. Children under 18 and patients whose medical rehabilitation the Compulsory Health Insurance Fund pays are exempt.
The accommodation provider collects the fee, declares it through the municipality's electronic system, running since 1 March 2025, and must tell the guest about it when giving the price. Whether a Lithuanian host must register guests with the Migration Department or the police could not be verified for this guide.
When to book what
On Neringa's 2025 tariff, the Curonian Spit entry fee is five times higher from 20 June to 20 August than in the rest of the year, EUR 50 against EUR 10 per car. A trip to Nida before 20 June or after 20 August costs the lower rate.
Non-EU travellers arriving from outside the Schengen area pass the EU Entry/Exit System, fully operational since 10 April 2026, at their first Schengen border. Compare prices on this page before booking.
