Where to stay in Naxos
The airport sits about 4 km by road from Chora, beside the beach resort of Agios Prokopios. From there the sand runs south along the west coast, and the mountain villages lie about 16 to 27 km inland from the port.

How the areas differ
Chora is the town and the port, with the Kastro, a fortified circular fortress on the hill, and the Portara, the marble gate of an unfinished temple of the 6th century BC. Agios Georgios, the town beach, bounds the newer part of town to the west; the mayor calls it the most important beach front of Chora.
South along the west coast come Agios Prokopios and Agia Anna, beach resorts beside the airport, then Plaka, a long sandy beach backed by dunes, and beyond it Mikri Vigla and Kastraki, about 11 to 16 km by road from the port.
Inland, the road across the island climbs to the mountain villages: Halki, about 16 km from the port, Filoti, about 19 km, and Apeiranthos, about 27 km.
Staying with a rental car
In Chora the municipality asks drivers to park outside the centre, in the peripheral car parks P1 to P6 on its map, and to use the e-naxios app, which guides them by GPS to free spaces. In summer 2026 a free pilot bus ran every 30 minutes from 19:00 to 01:00 from P6, next to Porto Naxos, through P5 to P1 to the port and the town centre.
On the peak weekends of 22 to 23 and 29 to 30 August 2026, the Port Authority closed the land zone of the port to vehicles from 12:00 to 16:00. The municipality offered the small car park next to the Iakovos Kambanellis Museum to taxis, tourist coaches, hotel vehicles and rental company cars instead, and banned parking on Papavasileiou street from Agia Theodosia to the Alpha Bank.
At Agios Georgios a municipal car park serves the beach, and a EUR 620,000 boardwalk funded in July 2026 will link it and the road network with the beach front. For the west coast resorts and the villages no official parking source was found, so ask the host. The rental contract sets the other limits: one island company prohibits unpaved roads for every vehicle except authorised 4x4s, and delivers free to the airport, the port and hotels within 10 km of the port. What the tourist tax and registration rules mean for a guest
Greece charges a climate crisis resilience fee per night for each room or property, and Naxos has no rate of its own: one national table applies, set by Law 5162/2024 and now in article 44 of the Code of indirect taxes (Law 5177/2025), unchanged for 2026. From April to October a short-term rental pays EUR 8 a night, or EUR 15 for a detached house over 80 m2; rooms to let pay EUR 2, hotels EUR 2 to 15 by stars and tourist villas EUR 15. From November to March a short-term rental pays EUR 2, or EUR 4 for a detached house over 80 m2, and hotels EUR 0.50 to 4. The host charges it after the stay and before departure, on a separate receipt, and a free stay pays nothing. A municipal visitor fee on the rent, borne by the guest, comes on top: 0.5% under national law, and no Naxos council decision raising it was found as of September 2026.
Every short-term rental must be in the AADE registry and show its 11-digit property registry number, the AMA, on every platform and advert, and the host declares each stay to AADE; properties with a tourism licence show a 16-digit ΕΣΛ or a 7-digit ΜΑΓ number instead. Since 1 October 2025, Law 5170/2025 has also required smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, a first aid kit, a guide to emergency numbers and civil liability insurance, with a EUR 5,000 fine for a host who fails the rules. A listing without an AMA is worth a question before paying.
When to book what
The 2026 summer bus timetable, from 29 June to 30 August, ran buses from Chora to Agios Prokopios and Agia Anna about every 15 to 30 minutes and to Plaka every 30 minutes, until 02:00, and to the airport every 30 minutes from 07:15 to 19:15. Outside those dates, check the current KTEL timetable before choosing a beach base without a car.
The climate fee drops on 1 November, from EUR 8 to EUR 2 a night for a short-term rental. For an August stay, check the Port Authority notices before arranging a car hand-over at the port, since the port zone closed to vehicles at midday on the peak weekends of 2026.
