About Naxos

Naxos airport sits about 4 km by road from Chora, beside the beach resort of Agios Prokopios. The sandy west coast runs south from there, and the mountain villages lie about 16 to 27 km inland from the port.

Chora (Naxos Town)

The town and its port, with the Kastro, a fortified circular fortress on the hill, and the Portara, the marble gate of an unfinished temple of the 6th century BC. It suits a first visit without much driving, ferry arrivals and a month outside summer.

Car and parking

The municipality asks drivers to park outside the centre, in the peripheral car parks P1 to P6, with free spaces shown in the e-naxios app. In summer 2026 a free bus ran every 30 minutes from 19:00 to 01:00 from P6, next to Porto Naxos, through the other car parks to the port. On the peak August weekends of 2026 the port zone closed to all vehicles from 12:00 to 16:00.

Agios Georgios

The town beach at the western edge of the newer part of Chora, which the mayor calls the most important beach front of the town. It suits families who want sand within walking distance of the town centre, about 0.5 km away by road.

Car and parking

A municipal car park serves the beach, and a EUR 620,000 boardwalk funded in July 2026 under the South Aegean 2021 to 2027 programme will link it and the road network with the beach front. Car park P6, next to Porto Naxos on the south side of town, was the first stop of the free summer evening bus in 2026.

Agios Prokopios and Agia Anna

Two beach resorts on the west coast south of Chora, beside the airport, with long sandy beaches. They suit a beach holiday with or without a car.

Car and parking

No official parking source for Agios Prokopios or Agia Anna was found as of September 2026, so ask the host. The KTEL summer timetable of 2026 (29 June to 30 August) ran buses from Chora about every 15 to 30 minutes from 07:15 until 02:00.

Plaka

The long sandy beach south of Agia Anna, backed by dunes. It suits long beach days and a quieter stay than the resorts to the north.

Mikri Vigla and Kastraki

The south-west coast beyond Plaka: Mikri Vigla, a headland between sandy bays, and Kastraki further south. They suit a quieter beach base with a car.

Car and parking

No official parking source was found as of September 2026. In summer 2026 KTEL ran nine buses a day from Chora to Mikri Vigla and seven to Kastraki. One island rental company prohibits unpaved roads for every vehicle except authorised 4x4s, so check the contract before taking tracks to the coves.

Halki, Filoti and Apeiranthos

The mountain villages on the road that crosses the island from Chora. They suit walkers and a village base with a car; the west coast beaches are about 15 km or more away.

No official parking source for the villages was found as of September 2026, so ask the host. By road the port is about 16 km from Halki, 19 km from Filoti and 27 km from Apeiranthos, and in summer 2026 KTEL ran seven or eight buses a day from Chora to each.

Is there a tourist tax in Naxos?

Greece charges a climate crisis resilience fee per night for each room or property, with the same national table on Naxos. A short-term rental pays EUR 8 a night from April to October and EUR 2 from November to March, or EUR 15 and EUR 4 for a detached house over 80 m2, amounts unchanged for 2026. A municipal visitor fee of 0.5% of the rent comes on top; no Naxos council decision raising it was found as of September 2026.
