A month in Ljubljana

EU citizens need no visa and can live in Slovenia for three months without registering; for a longer stay they must obtain a residence registration certificate at the administrative unit before the three months run out. Non-EU visitors may stay 90 days in any 180 across the whole Schengen area, and since 10 April 2026 the EU Entry/Exit System registers them at the external border.

Since 21 November 2025 Slovenia has offered a temporary residence permit for digital nomads: non-EU nationals who work remotely for employers or clients outside Slovenia, or are self-employed abroad. It is issued for up to one year and cannot be extended, a new application is possible six months after the previous permit expires, and the applicant needs monthly funds of at least twice the average monthly net salary in Slovenia. The application goes to a Slovenian embassy or consulate, or to an administrative unit for anyone already living in Slovenia legally.

The tourist tax of EUR 2.50 per person per night, plus the promotion tax, EUR 3.13 in all, applies to every night of a month. The exemption for long stays covers only people on temporary work who stay continuously for more than 30 days in the same accommodation; the other exemptions cover groups such as children under 7, spa patients with a medical referral and school trips. Guests pay the tax to the host with the stay.

The host reports the guest through AJPES eTurizem within 12 hours of arrival, whatever the length of the stay. Hosts must also be entered in the AJPES register of accommodation establishments, so a listing that cannot give its registration is worth questioning before a deposit is paid.

EU citizens who plan to stay beyond three months apply for the residence registration certificate at the administrative unit where they live, and they may apply straight after arriving rather than waiting for the deadline.

Monthly parking decides the choice for anyone with a car. LPT leases spaces by the month at some car parks: EUR 50 at the Metelkova ulica car park and EUR 30 at Trg prekomorskih brigad by Kino Šiška, with leases capped at half the spaces of each car park. The central garages charge EUR 3 an hour after the first three hours, which adds up over a month.

Street bays in the centre allow 30 to 120 minutes at a time, so they cannot hold a car for a month; the park and ride sites charge per 24 hours instead. Šiška suits a month in a cultural quarter away from the tourist centre, about 3 km from Prešeren Square. Trnovo and Krakovo are closer, with Plečnik's bridge and house and P+R Barje about 2 km away, but their street zone status was not verified. Bežigrad suits a car kept at the Stožice park and ride, EUR 1.50 for 24 hours with two bus tickets.

Airbnb calls 28 nights or more a monthly stay. It charges the first month up front and releases it to the host 24 hours after check-in, then charges each later month 10 days before it starts. How other platforms label long stays in Ljubljana was not verified as of September 2026.

Expecting the tourist tax to stop after 30 days. That exemption covers temporary work, not holidays.
