How the areas differ
Kalamata is the capital and chief port of Messenia, on the Nedon river at the head of the gulf. The centre runs from the central square to the castle, about 1 km apart, and the Navarinou seafront, about 2 km from the square, has two of the city's five Blue Flag beaches for 2026.
To the south-east, Kardamyli and Stoupa lie on the West Mani coast, about 35 and 43 km from the city by road. Kardamyli is the seat of the municipality, with small beaches and a medieval castle; Stoupa, about 8 km further, is a village that lives on tourism. The Mani itself is the southern extension of the Taygetus range, with a rugged interior.
To the south-west, across the gulf, Koroni sits below its Venetian castle, Methoni has its castle and beaches, and Pylos is the harbour town on Navarino Bay, with Gialova and its two Blue Flag resort beaches close by.
Staying with a rental car
From the airport by road: Kalamata about 10 km, Kardamyli about 45 km, Koroni about 47 km, Pylos about 48 km, Stoupa about 53 km and Methoni about 56 km. A routing estimate puts Kalamata to Kardamyli at under an hour for 35 km and Kalamata to Methoni at about an hour and a half for 61 km, so the drives take longer than the distances suggest.
Stoupa and Koroni are similar distances from Kalamata, about 43 and 52 km, but on opposite sides of the gulf, and a day trip from one side to the other drives back round the head of the gulf.
In Kalamata, the municipal north and central car parks on the Nedontas river hold 103 and 328 spaces. Council decision 82/2025 made them run every day around the clock, and a lessee now operates them; the tariff was not found. For street parking in the city and for the villages no official rules were found, so ask the host whether a space comes with the stay. GetCar's car rental page for Kalamata covers the hire.
Tax and registration rules for a guest
Greece charges a climate resilience fee per night and per room or property, paid by the guest before departure. Article 44 of the Code of indirect taxes (Law 5177/2025) sets the amounts, unchanged for 2026: from April to October EUR 8 in a short-term rental, EUR 15 in a detached house over 80 m2 or a tourist villa, EUR 2 in rented rooms and EUR 2 to 15 in hotels by stars; from November to March between EUR 0.50 and EUR 4.
The municipal visitors' fee differs by municipality. Pylos-Nestoras, which covers Pylos, Methoni, Koroni and Gialova, raised it to 0.75% in council decision 69/2025 of 30 July 2025, in force three months after publication. West Mani kept its rates for 2026 in decision 47/2026, 0.5% for rooms, hotels and lodging, and no decision raising it was found for Kalamata, where the national 0.5% applies. Hotels and professional hosts charge it; private hosts who let one or two properties do not.
Every short-term rental must show its 11-digit AMA on every platform and advert; licensed properties show a 16-digit ΕΣΛ or a 7-digit ΜΑΓ number. Since 1 October 2025, Law 5170/2025 has required smoke detectors, a fire extinguisher, a first aid kit, a guide to emergency numbers and civil liability insurance.
When to book what

The airport's 2026 flight schedule is unverified as of September 2026, so check with the airline before planning around it, especially outside summer. The climate fee falls from EUR 8 to EUR 2 a night in a short-term rental from November to March, and the city is the base that works all year.
