About Florence

Everything inside the viali is a camera-controlled traffic zone, and since June 2026 no new holiday lets may open in the historic centre or the older districts around it. Where the car sleeps, and what kind of let the stay is, decide the base.

Airport
Florence Peretola (FLR). The T2 tram reaches the centre in 20 minutes from a stop two minutes' walk from arrivals. Source
Tourist tax
Since 1 February 2025, per person per night: hotels EUR 3.50 to 8.00 by stars; B&Bs, room lets, holiday homes and holiday lets EUR 6.00; residenze d'epoca EUR 7.00; hostels EUR 4.00; campsites EUR 3.50. Source
Tax cap and exemptions
At most 7 consecutive nights. Children under 12, University of Florence students and up to two companions of a hospital patient are exempt, among others. Source
Holiday lets in the centre
Since 21 June 2026 no new holiday lets of up to 30 days may start in the UNESCO centre (Zone A1, frozen since 2024) or in sub-zones A3 and A4. Each let needs a five-year authorisation from the city. Source
Licensed stays
Every hotel, B&B and holiday let must have a national identification code (CIN), shown outside the building and in every listing. Source
Check-in
Hosts may accept only guests with an identity document or passport, and register each guest with the police within 24 hours. Source
Traffic zone (ZTL)
The centre is closed to unauthorised cars Monday to Friday 07:30 to 20:00 and Saturday 07:30 to 16:00, with a night zone from the first Thursday of April to the first Sunday of October. Source
Hotel guests and the ZTL
Hotels, pensioni and B&Bs inside the ZTL can put a guest's plate on the white list for EUR 1 per entry. The car takes the shortest route and may stop 30 minutes to unload. Source
Park and ride
Villa Costanza, off the A1: EUR 7 from 10 to 24 hours, EUR 40 for 30 days, with trams every 6 to 8 minutes. Cars may stay 30 consecutive days at most. Source
Monthly stays
Up to 30 days a flat is a short let. A home lease of more than 30 days in a year must be registered with the Agenzia delle Entrate within 30 days. Source

Areas of Florence

Duomo and Signoria

The core of the UNESCO centre, with the Duomo, Piazza della Signoria and the Uffizi on foot. It suits a first visit and short stays, and it is crowded by day.

Car and parking

Inside the ZTL. A hotel, pensione or B&B here can white-list a guest's plate for EUR 1 per entry; after 30 minutes to unload, the car goes to a garage or outside the zone. Residents' bays are towing zones at all hours.

Santa Croce

The square and basilica east of the Signoria, with bars and restaurants around them. It suits visitors who want the centre with livelier evenings.

Inside the ZTL, with the same hours and the same hotel white list. Holiday flats are not named in that rule, so ask the host before driving in.

Oltrarno

The south bank around Santo Spirito and San Frediano, with Palazzo Pitti, the Boboli gardens and artisans' workshops. It suits repeat visitors and longer stays.

Inside the ZTL, which takes in the Oltrarno. The Oltrarno Calza garage by Boboli charges EUR 3.00 an hour.

Santa Maria Novella and San Lorenzo

The station quarter and the Mercato Centrale. It suits arrivals by train or by the T2 tram from the airport, and short stays.

Car and parking

Inside the ZTL, which covers the area inside the viali. Garages nearby: Fortezza Fiera and Porta al Prato at EUR 20 a day, and the station garage at EUR 4.00 an hour with no daily rate.

Campo di Marte

A residential district east of the viali, with the football stadium and its own railway station. It suits longer stays and visitors with a car.

Car and parking

Outside the ZTL. Blue bays are paid on weekdays from 08:00 to 20:00, EUR 1.00 to 3.00 an hour depending on the ring, and the Alberti garage charges EUR 15 a day.

The hill town above Florence, with villas, olive groves and views over the valley. It suits a quieter base for a trip with a car.

A separate comune, outside Florence's ZTL and its holiday-let freeze. Fiesole issues residents' parking permits for its Zona F, so ask the host where a guest's car goes.

How much is the tourist tax in Florence?

Can holiday flats still open in central Florence?

No new ones. Since 21 June 2026 no new holiday lets of up to 30 days may start in the UNESCO centre, where only flats let in 2024 may carry on, or in the surrounding sub-zones A3 and A4, where only flats already in use on that date may.

Which Florence area is easiest with a car?

Campo di Marte, outside the ZTL, or Fiesole on the hill, a separate town. For a centre base, the Villa Costanza park and ride off the A1 charges EUR 7 for 10 to 24 hours, with trams into town every 6 to 8 minutes.
