Where to stay in Doha

Doha's areas run along one coast, from the old souq about 10 km from the airport by road to West Bay's towers, Katara's beach, the Pearl and Lusail about 24 km out, and Al Wakrah to the south.

Msheireb and Souq Waqif are the old centre. Souq Waqif is a market of garments, spices, handicrafts and restaurants in a building from the late 19th or early 20th century, renovated in 2006; Msheireb Downtown Doha, beside it, is a regeneration of the historic Mushayrib district. Both are about 10 km from Hamad International by road.

The 7 km Corniche runs north from old Doha to West Bay, the business district of Al Dafna on land reclaimed in the 1980s, with dozens of towers, the City Center mall and mostly upmarket apartments, about 6 km from Souq Waqif. Katara, a cultural and commercial complex opened in 2010, sits on the coast between West Bay and the Pearl with a long beach.

The Pearl-Qatar is an artificial island of nearly 4 square km, the first land in Qatar that foreign nationals could buy freehold, with around 52,000 residents in 2024. Lusail, a new city north of the West Bay Lagoon about 7 km from the Pearl by road, is planned with marinas and residential districts and holds the stadium of the 2022 World Cup final. Al Wakrah, the old fishing and pearling town south of Doha, has a rebuilt souq and a free public beach (via GetCar), about 18 km from the airport.

Staying with a rental car

Doha has no citywide parking tariff. The municipality designates paid areas and approves each operator's fees, so some car parks charge and many streets and lots are free, and the tariffs at Souq Waqif, West Bay, Katara, the Pearl and Lusail Boulevard are not published officially (via GetCar). Souq Waqif has a three-level underground car park for about 2,000 cars, entered from Al Matar Street (via GetCar). A parking offence costs QAR 300 under the Traffic Law (via GetCar).

The Ministry of Transport runs free park-and-ride car parks beside the metro stations at Al Wakra, Al Qassar, Lusail and Education City, which makes Al Wakrah and Lusail practical bases for a car: leave it at the station and take the Red Line, which runs from Al Wakra through the airport and the centre to West Bay and Lusail (via GetCar). There are no road tolls in Qatar (via GetCar).

GetCar's guide Driving in Doha covers the airport rental desks, the Traffic Law and its fines, the Metrash2 app, parking and fuel.

Fees and licences a guest meets

Quub found no tourism fee or levy on hotel bills in the laws and circulars Qatar Tourism publishes, and no official rate for a service charge; this is unverified as of September 2026, so check what a total includes before paying.

A holiday home needs a Qatar Tourism licence, valid for five years; Circular No. 4 of 2022 allows apartments, houses, villas and camps anywhere in the country, but not a whole building. Since Circular No. 11 of 2022 only licensed homes may be listed online, platforms must show each listing's licence number clearly, and booking and guest details go to the Ministry of Interior through the SITA platform.

The licensee lets the home by the day or week, or for any temporary period of at most thirty consecutive days, must give the guest a list of house rules and a contact number that answers around the clock, and may not charge costs outside the contract.

When to book what

Check entry first. British citizens get a tourist visa on arrival, and a stay beyond 30 days needs an extension from the Ministry of Interior before it expires. Visit Qatar lists EU citizens as visa-free with a passport valid for three months and a confirmed hotel booking on arrival; the length of the stay is unverified as of September 2026. US citizens get a visa on arrival for stays of up to 90 days each.

UK travel advice, updated in August 2026, reports strikes and retaliatory attacks by Iran across the region since 8 July, Qatar included, and tells travellers to expect flight cancellations and airspace closures, so read it before paying for a stay that cannot be cancelled.
