A month in Doha

A furnished apartment for a month in Doha can be a hotel, a holiday home licensed by Qatar Tourism, or a lease under Qatar's property leasing law, and the line between the last two falls at about 30 days.

What a month is in law

Qatar Tourism treats holiday homes as hotel establishments. Its Circular No. 1 of 2021 lets a licensed holiday home by the day or week, or for any temporary period of at most thirty consecutive days, and it must not charge the guest costs outside the contract.

Law No. 4 of 2008 on property leasing, as amended in 2009, covers residential premises and furnished units let for more than one month, and exempts hotels and tourist accommodation. A lease under it is drawn up in writing and registered at the Real Estate Lease Registration Office of the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning, and the rental disputes committee and the courts do not hear a tenant's claim on an unregistered lease. A holiday home therefore cannot be let for more than 30 consecutive days, and a furnished unit let for longer than a month comes under the leasing law.

What a month costs in fees

No reputable source on monthly rents in Doha was found, so this guide gives no rent figures. No tourism fee on lodging was found in Qatar Tourism's published laws and circulars either; unverified as of September 2026.

Under a lease the deposit for residential premises may not exceed two months' rent, and the tenant pays water, electricity and telephone charges unless the lease says otherwise. In a holiday home, the licensee may charge only what the contract states, so settle utilities and cleaning before paying.

The areas that suit a month

Msheireb and Souq Waqif suit a month in the old centre, about 10 km from the airport. West Bay suits a month in a tower near the business district. The Pearl-Qatar, with around 52,000 residents in 2024, suits a month in an apartment by the water.

Lusail and Al Wakrah suit a month with the car in daily use: the Ministry of Transport runs free park-and-ride car parks at both metro stations, on the Red Line into the centre. These choices are editorial.

The paperwork and entry limits

British citizens get a tourist visa on arrival, and anyone staying beyond 30 days must extend it through the Ministry of Interior before it expires or pay a fine before leaving. UK travel advice also says a stay of more than 30 days needs health insurance, bought before travel from an insurer registered with the Ministry of Public Health, at a standard premium of QAR 50 per person per month.

US citizens get a visa on arrival valid for two years or until the passport expires, with each stay up to 90 days. EU citizens enter visa-free with a passport valid for three months, and the length of the stay is unverified as of September 2026. Visit Qatar asks visa-free and visa-on-arrival visitors for a confirmed hotel booking on arrival; whether a holiday home booking counts is not stated, so carry the confirmation.

What platforms call a long stay

Airbnb calls a reservation of 28 nights or more a monthly stay. It charges the first month up front and releases it to the host 24 hours after check-in, charges later months 10 days before each period, and applies its long-term cancellation policy, which generally asks for 30 days' notice of changes. In Qatar every holiday home listing must carry its Qatar Tourism licence number, whichever platform shows it.

Pitfalls

A listing without a licence number. Circular No. 11 of 2022 makes a valid licence a condition of being listed at all.

A stay past 30 days in a holiday home. The circular caps a holiday home let at thirty consecutive days; beyond that, ask for a lease registered under Law No. 4 of 2008.

A 30-day visa on a British passport. Extend it through the Ministry of Interior before it runs out.

Sharing as an unmarried couple. UK travel advice says couples living together while unmarried is illegal in Qatar.

Leaving with bills unpaid. UK travel advice lists unpaid hotel and car hire bills among financial crimes that can bring a travel ban.
