Where to stay in Cappadocia
The five towns of central Cappadocia sit within 10 km of Göreme by road, so a car makes any of them a base for the whole area. What changes is the drive from the airport and how close the Göreme Open Air Museum is.

How the towns differ
Göreme lies among the white rock cones, about 2 km by road from the Göreme Open Air Museum, and Commons photographers show hotels there built into the rock, labelled cave hotels. Uçhisar, about 4 km away, sits at the foot of its castle rock, honeycombed with carved rooms. Ortahisar, in Ürgüp district, overlooks a valley of carved rock about 6 km from Göreme.
Ürgüp and Avanos are district towns, each with a tourist information office. Ürgüp is about 10 km from Göreme by road, near the capped rock pillars called the Three Beauties. Avanos lies about 9 km north of Göreme on the Kızılırmak river, entered over a road bridge.
Two airports, two drives
Nevşehir Kapadokya airport is the nearer for most of the area: about 35 km by road to Avanos, 38 km to Uçhisar, 41 km to Göreme, 45 km to Ortahisar and 50 km to Ürgüp. The state airports authority lists a city shuttle timed to scheduled flights, taxis and rental desks for Enterprise, Avis, Garenta and ADD Car.
Kayseri airport is farther: about 69 km to Avanos, 71 km to Ürgüp, 75 km to Ortahisar, 78 km to Göreme and 83 km to Uçhisar. From Kayseri, Avanos and Ürgüp save the most driving; from Nevşehir, Avanos and Uçhisar.
Staying with a rental car

No municipal parking rule or tariff was found for any of the five towns, so parking is a question for the hotel or host before booking. For a flat or house, the regulation on tourism rentals makes the host state in the listing whether parking comes with it.
The Göreme Open Air Museum, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism site, is open every day from 08:00 to 17:45, with a night opening from 18:00 to 23:00; the museum page lists Çavuşin Church, Zelve-Paşabağlar and the underground cities of Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı among the sites nearby. The fee for foreign visitors is not on that page. GetCar's car rental page for Cappadocia lists the rental options.
Tax and registration rules for a guest
Cappadocia has no local tax. The national accommodation tax is 1% of the room price before VAT from 1 May to 31 December 2026, half the 2% in the law, and it appears as its own line on the invoice. When a booking site sold the stay without it, the hotel invoices the tax to the guest after the stay.
A flat or house let for up to 100 days needs a Ministry of Culture and Tourism permit, with the number in the listing and a plaque marked Turizm Amaçlı Konut at the entrance, and every flat owner in the building must have agreed. Hotels and permitted flats record each guest's passport or identity card and report it to the police at once.
When to book what
Pick the airport first, then the town: a flight into Nevşehir Kapadokya points to Avanos, Uçhisar or Göreme, a flight into Kayseri to Avanos or Ürgüp. Then ask the hotel about parking before paying.
The 1% tax rate runs to 31 December 2026; from 1 January 2027 the 2% in the law applies unless a new decision extends the cut. Compare prices for each town on this page once the dates are fixed.

Questions
Which town in Cappadocia is best for a first visit?
Göreme, about 2 km by road from the Göreme Open Air Museum. Uçhisar and Ortahisar lie 4 to 6 km away.
Should you fly into Nevşehir or Kayseri?
Nevşehir Kapadokya is nearer to every town: 35 to 50 km by road against 69 to 83 km from Kayseri. Kayseri suits Ürgüp and Avanos best.
Is parking free in Göreme?
No municipal parking rule or tariff was found for Göreme or the other four towns, so ask the hotel before booking. A flat listing must say whether parking is included.
What is a cave hotel?
A hotel with rooms built into the rock, as Commons photographs of Göreme show. It is a hotel like any other in law: it records guests for the police and adds the accommodation tax.
Is there a tourist tax in Cappadocia?
Only the national accommodation tax, 1% of the price before VAT from 1 May to 31 December 2026, shown on the invoice.
