About Bergamo

Bergamo is two towns: the walled Città Alta on its hill, where a visitor's car stops at a car park, and the lower town around the station. Milan Bergamo airport lies about 7 km from the lower-town centre by road.

Airport
Milan Bergamo (BGY), at Orio al Serio, about 7 km by road from Piazza Matteotti. ATB's Airport Bus runs every 20 minutes to the station and, directly or with a change, to Città Alta, on a EUR 3.00 three-zone ticket. Source
Tourist tax
7 percent of the night's price per person (breakfast included, VAT and extras excluded), capped at EUR 5 per night, for at most five consecutive nights. Due in hotels and short lets; minors are exempt. Source
National code (CIN)
Every licensed stay, hotel or short-let flat, has a national CIN shown outside the building and in every listing, in force since 2 November 2024. Lombardy also assigns its own regional code, the CIR. Source
ID at check-in
Guests show an ID card or passport, and the host registers each one with the police within 24 hours. Source
Self check-in
An Interior Ministry circular, upheld by the Council of State in November 2025, requires the host to verify each guest in person or by a video link at the door. A code sent after an ID upload does not meet it. Source
Città Alta by car
The walled centre is a permanent camera zone. The Città Alta e Colli zone closes Sundays and holidays 10:00 to 24:00 and, in summer time, Thursday to Saturday 21:00 to 01:00; then visitors may enter only for the Fara, Porta Sant'Alessandro or Tre Armi car parks, via the Viale Vittorio Emanuele II gate. Lower-town zones
Via XX Settembre, Piazza Matteotti by the Teatro Donizetti, Via Tasso, Via Pignolo and Piazzale Marconi in front of the station are permanent camera-controlled zones. Source
Parking Fara
The 465-space garage on Via della Fara, open 24 hours, 2.15 m height limit: EUR 3.30 an hour, EUR 30 for 24 hours, EUR 99 for a week. Reach it within 30 minutes of passing the gate. Source
Free park and ride
Unguarded, free interchange car parks: 300 spaces by the Fiera on bus line 1, and ex Bonini on Via San Bernardino, open 24 hours, on line 6. Source
Monthly stays
Beyond 30 days in a year a lease must be registered with the Agenzia delle Entrate within 30 days, and an unregistered lease is void. A residential lease deposit may not exceed three months' rent. Source

Città Alta

The walled upper town: Piazza Vecchia and the Venetian walls, linked to the lower town by funicular. It suits a first visit and quiet evenings; the streets are steep and cobbled.

Car and parking

A permanent camera zone inside the walls. At the hill zone's closing times a visitor may drive only to the Fara, Porta Sant'Alessandro or Tre Armi car parks through the Viale Vittorio Emanuele II gate, and the car park registers the plate. Fara costs EUR 3.30 an hour or EUR 30 for 24 hours.

Città Bassa

The lower-town centre: the Sentierone, Piazza Matteotti, the shops of Via XX Settembre and the station. It suits trains, the airport bus and longer stays.

Car and parking

Via XX Settembre, Piazza Matteotti by the Teatro Donizetti and Piazzale Marconi are permanent camera zones. ATB's Garage San Marco costs EUR 2.50 an hour, and the Ex Gasometro by the station EUR 1.50 an hour by day with a EUR 10 daily maximum.

Borgo Santa Caterina

An old borgo east of the centre, with local shops along one long street. It suits a neighbourhood base for a longer stay.

Car and parking

Via Borgo Santa Caterina is not in the city's table of limited traffic zones. Blue bays are paid at the meters or in the apps ATB lists; ATB warns that other QR codes on meters are not valid.

San Vigilio and the Colli

The green hill above Città Alta, reached by the San Vigilio funicular from the upper town, with villas and views over the city. It suits a quiet stay for guests happy to ride the funicular.

Car and parking

Inside the Città Alta e Colli zone, closed to visitors on Sundays and holidays from 10:00 and on summer-time weekend evenings. Residents of the Colli can ask ATB to register a guest's plate for Sundays and holidays, so ask the host.

The comune around Milan Bergamo airport. It suits one night before or after a flight more than a stay in the city.

Can a visitor drive into Città Alta?

How much is the Bergamo tourist tax?
