Where to stay in Amman
Amman's areas differ in age and height: the old hills around Downtown, the towers of Abdali, the residential west in Abdoun and Sweifieh, and Madaba to the south, closer to Queen Alia International than any of them.

How the areas differ

Downtown, Al Balad, is the old town in the valley of Wadi Amman, with its souks, the 2nd century Roman theatre, the Odeon and the Hashemite Plaza, and the Citadel on the hill above. The two hills beside it are the usual alternatives: Jabal Amman, a district of early 20th century houses where Rainbow Street runs from the 1st Circle down towards Mango Street with rooftop restaurants and bars, and Jabal al-Weibdeh, settled in the 1920s around Paris Square, with cafés, galleries and the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts. By road each is about 4 to 5 km from the Roman theatre, and 1 to 2 km in a straight line.
Abdali, a development begun in 2005 with hotels, apartments, offices and shops, holds the city's tallest towers, and Shmeisani lies beside it. Further west, Abdoun is described as the most affluent residential area of the city, with cafés and malls around Abdoun Circle, and Sweifieh next to it is known for its malls and the Wakalat Street pedestrian zone; both are about 8 to 9 km from Downtown by road.
Madaba, a town of about 60,000 known for its mosaics and the mosaic map of the Holy Land, is about 22 km from the airport and about 33 km from Downtown. All the Amman areas are 33 to 38 km from the airport by road.
Staying with a rental car
Amman publishes no municipal parking tariff: GetCar found no meter rates, kerb colour code, clamping or towing fee or parking app from the Greater Amman Municipality, and a smart parking project for about 5,600 spaces was still at tender in June 2026. In practice a driver uses garages and hotel and mall car parks, the Abdali and Boulevard garages among them, and the traffic law fines unpaid parking at JOD 10 (via GetCar).
The city's traffic runs round the numbered Circles along Zahran Street, the 1st by Jabal Amman and Rainbow Street and the 7th where the Airport Road arrives, and Downtown's one-way streets climb the hills around the valley. Unlicensed valets have been a municipal target since May 2026, so use the valet the hotel names (via GetCar). GetCar's guide Driving in Amman covers the airport desks, the absence of tolls, the traffic law and its fines, the 0.5 alcohol limit, parking, the BRT and fuel.
The practical choice: in Downtown, Jabal Amman and Jabal al-Weibdeh, ask the hotel or host where the car goes before booking and walk once there; in Abdali, Abdoun and Sweifieh, a building with its own garage lets the car work every day; Madaba suits an arrival or departure night with the car at the door.
Taxes and registration for a guest

A hotel bill carries the general sales tax at 8%, the rate the Cabinet set for hotels and tourist restaurants on 31 May 2020 for every part of the kingdom except the Aqaba Special Economic Zone, according to the Income and Sales Tax Department's published list. The same decision cut the service charge that hotels and tourist restaurants add to 5% from 10%, from 1 July 2020. In May 2025 the Jordan Hotels Association reported a Cabinet decision raising the service charge to 7%; the decision itself was not found and is unverified as of September 2026, so check what a quoted total includes.
No Ministry of Tourism rule on licensing furnished apartments or holiday rentals, or on licence numbers in listings, was found, so none is stated here. The UK government says foreigners who stay more than 14 days must register their biometrics at a police station, and that the rule does not apply to tourists.
When to book what
Settle entry first. British, EU and US visitors buy a single-entry visa on arrival at Queen Alia for JOD 40. The Jordan Pass, JOD 70, 75 or 80 with one to three days at Petra, waives that fee when it is bought before arrival and the stay lasts at least two consecutive nights, according to the pass's own site; the UK government's page says three nights. Airport immigration checks the length of stay on departure and sends a visitor who left early to pay the fee.
UK travel advice, updated on 10 September 2026 with information on Iranian missile strikes on Jordan, advises against all travel within 3 km of the Syrian border and calls the regional situation unpredictable, and on 2 March 2026 the US State Department raised its advice to reconsider travel. Read both before paying for a stay that cannot be cancelled.
