A month in Agadir

Citizens of EU countries, the UK and the US are on Morocco's list of nationals exempt from an entry visa. The national tourist office gives 90 days as the longest tourist trip, with an extension of another 90 days requested at the nearest police station. UK advice gives the same 90 days, and France's foreign ministry counts three months as 90 days exactly.

A month booked with a hotel or a guest house remains a tourist stay: the taxe de séjour applies to every night and the registration form applies on arrival. According to the Ministry of the Interior's portal, Law 07-20 extended the tax to flats rented by their owners to tourists, including through online booking platforms.

Morocco has a separate law for residential leases, Law 67-12. Its text could not be checked for this guide, so nothing here covers deposits or notice periods under it.

The city centre and the seafront suit a month without much driving. The beach is under 1 km away, the large souk sits in the centre, and city buses run along Avenue Mohammed V between the port and Inezgane for 5 DH a ticket. The marina, at the north end of the beach, suits a month in an apartment by the harbour, with the promenade running south from it.

Tamraght and Aourir suit a surf month on a budget, and the tourism board points to seafront hostels there. Taghazout Bay suits a resort month, with golf, the beach and the free shuttle to the villages; SAPST lists nearly 2,000 residential units in the resort.

Taghazout itself is small and busy in summer: the tourism board warns that the influx of tourists during and after the summer holidays can surprise. A quieter month there falls outside that period.

Expect to show a passport at check-in and to sign the individual registration form, which the host declares electronically to the police. Hotels and guest houses hold an operating authorisation under Law 80-14, and a homestay in the host's own home needs a five-year authorisation from the local authority. No authorisation scheme for a whole flat rented by its owner was found, so ask the host how the stay is declared.

The tax runs every night. With Agadir's own rates not found, the national ranges give the scale: a 4-star hotel charges 5 to 10 DH per person per night, so two adults pay 300 to 600 DH in tax over 30 nights. Children under 12 are exempt.

Agadir Mobilité now runs public parking for the commune but is still reviewing how, and it publishes no tariff. For a month with a car in the city, a flat with its own space removes the question. On the coast, the Taghazout Bay shuttle covers trips between the resort and the two villages every day from 9:00 to 22:00.

A car is not needed on arrival. The airport authority lists a taxi rank on the arrivals esplanade that works around the clock, and bus shuttles between the airport and Agadir that stop in Inezgane and Ait Melloul. The airport car park has 1,300 places behind automatic barriers, paid at the exit.

Airbnb calls a booking of 28 nights or more a monthly stay. The guest pays the first month, then monthly payments follow; a long-term cancellation policy applies, and changes generally need 30 days' notice.

Assuming the city's tax rate applies everywhere. Each commune sets its own, and Taghazout and Aourir are separate from Agadir.
