Zakynthos is compact: the town, Laganas and Kalamaki all lie within about 6 km of the airport. The bases differ in noise, beaches and the rules of the turtle park more than in distance.

Zakynthos Town

The capital and port, with Solomos Square, the Agios Dionysios church and Bochali hill above the harbour. It suits a month, an arrival by ferry, and travellers who want a town with the beaches a short drive away.

Car and parking

A block of central streets has been pedestrian since August 2025, with further changes on 29 March 2026. The municipality's free car parks at the Old Hospital, at Kaminia by the KTEL bus station and at Kydoni by the Jumbo store are linked to the centre by a free bus, daily 07:00 to 23:00, about every 20 minutes. Paid parking for the centre has been planned; whether it operates is unverified as of September 2026.

Tsilivi

A resort on the east coast north of the town, on a long sandy bay. It suits families who want a beach with the town about 6 km away.

Laganas and Kalamaki

Laganas is the island's party resort on the long beach of Laganas bay; Kalamaki, next to the airport, is quieter. Both face turtle nesting beaches of the National Marine Park. Laganas suits nights out; Kalamaki suits a quiet beach close to the airport.

Car and parking

On the nesting beaches, including Kalamaki and Laganas bay, cars, motorbikes and bicycles are not allowed and the public may stay from 07:00 to sunset. No official parking source for either resort was found as of September 2026; ask the host.

Vasilikos peninsula

The green peninsula that closes Laganas bay on the east, with villas and beaches such as Porto Roma, Banana, Dafni and Gerakas. It suits villa stays and families with a car.

Gerakas and Dafni are turtle nesting beaches: no vehicles on the sand, open 07:00 to sunset, and no umbrellas beyond the endorsed ones; Sekania is closed to the public. No official parking source for the villages was found as of September 2026; ask the host.

Alykes and Alykanas

Neighbouring resorts on the north-east coast around a long bay and the salt pans, with boats to the Blue Caves. They suit families and quieter beach stays.

Keri and Limni Keriou

The south-west corner: the small resort of Limni Keriou on its bay and the hill village of Keri, whose lighthouse road ends above the Mizithres sea stacks. It suits quiet stays and walkers with a car.

Is there a tourist tax in Zakynthos?

Yes. Greece charges a climate resilience fee per night and per room or property: a short-term rental pays EUR 8 from April to October and EUR 2 from November to March, a detached house over 80 m2 or a villa EUR 15 and EUR 4, and hotels EUR 2 to 15 from April to October, by star rating. Hotels and professional hosts also charge a municipal visitors' fee of 0.5% of the price; no Zakynthos decision raising it was found.

Where can a rental car park in Zakynthos Town?

In the free municipal car parks around the town, at the Old Hospital, at Kaminia by the KTEL bus station and at Kydoni by the Jumbo store. A free town bus links them with the centre every day from 07:00 to 23:00, about every 20 minutes. Several central streets are pedestrian.

Can a car be driven onto the turtle beaches?

No. On the nesting beaches of the National Marine Park, such as Kalamaki, Laganas bay, Dafni and Gerakas, cars, motorbikes and bicycles are not allowed, and the public may stay from 07:00 to sunset. Sekania is closed to the public.
