Where to stay in Warsaw

Most of central Warsaw sits inside one paid street zone that charges on weekdays only, and two city garages sell parking by the hour, the day or the month. The clean transport zone decides whether an older car may enter at all.

How the areas differ

The Old Town grew from a settlement founded at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries and became the capital in 1596. War destroyed almost all of it, and the reconstruction was faithful enough for UNESCO to list it. Castle Square, the Royal Castle, the Old Town Square and the New Town beyond the Barbican fill a small area that suits a first visit on foot.

South of Jerozolimskie Avenue, Śródmieście runs along Nowy Świat to Trzech Krzyży Square, Mokotowska Street and the 1950s MDM district. Powiśle lies below the escarpment by the river, with the old power station, the Vistula boulevards and the university library's roof gardens.

Across the Vistula, Praga kept its pre-war tenements and what the tourism board calls a completely different pace of life from the left bank, a metro ride from the centre. Mokotów, south of the centre, has the villas and modernist houses of Old Mokotów, about 8 km by road from Chopin airport. Wola, west of the centre and as close to the airport, has the Warsaw Rising Museum, in a district the tourism board describes as turning into a business centre.

Street parking in the paid zone costs PLN 4.50 for the first hour, PLN 5.40 for the second, PLN 6.40 for the third and PLN 4.50 for each hour after, on weekdays from 08:00 to 20:00. Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays are free. Meters take coins and cards around the clock and carry a payment made at night to 08:00 on the next paid day, and one ticket is valid anywhere in the zone. Camera cars check plates, so an unpaid stay brings a PLN 300 notice by post, PLN 200 if paid within 14 days.

For overnight parking the city runs two garages: under Plac Krasińskich, by the Old Town, and under ulica Waryńskiego at Politechnika metro. Both charge PLN 8 for every hour begun, PLN 80 for 24 hours and PLN 840 for 30 days on the tariff in force from 1 June 2026. The resident permit for street parking needs Warsaw registration and a Warsaw tax return, so a visitor cannot buy one.

The clean transport zone covers most of Śródmieście and parts of the districts around it, 37 km2 in all. Since 1 January 2026 petrol cars older than 26 years or below Euro 3 and diesels older than 17 years or below Euro 5 may not enter. Any car may enter on four days a calendar year without meeting the standard, and the fine is up to PLN 500. Checks run on the Polish vehicle register; how a foreign-registered car is checked was not confirmed, unverified as of October 2026.

GetCar's car rental page for Warsaw compares local and international rental companies. Driving in from the west on the A2, the Nowy Tomyśl to Konin concession charges PLN 40 for each of its three 50 km sections since 11 March 2026; motorways run by the State have been free for cars since 1 July 2023.

Tax and registration rules for a guest

Poland's local visitor levy, the opłata miejscowa, exists only where a city council adopts it, with a 2026 cap of PLN 3.46 a day. Quub found no Warsaw resolution introducing it; unverified as of October 2026.

A foreigner staying in Poland for no more than 30 days needs no residence registration. Short-term rental flats do not yet carry a national ID number: the bill that would require one in every listing passed committee on 17 September 2026 and awaits its second reading in the Sejm.

When to book what

Street parking costs nothing from Friday 20:00 to Monday 08:00, so a weekend arrival can leave the car on the street. A full weekday on the meter, 08:00 to 20:00, adds up to PLN 56.80 at the zone rates, while a city garage charges PLN 80 for 24 hours. Non-EU travellers flying in from outside the Schengen area pass through the Entry/Exit System, fully operational since 10 April 2026. A drive in from Germany or Lithuania can include a border check: Poland has extended those checks to 30 March 2027. Compare prices on this page before booking.
