Tangier's white medina and its Kasbah look over the bay, the newer city spreads beyond the Grand Socco, and the Corniche follows the beach towards Malabata. Cap Spartel, on the Atlantic side, is a drive of about 13 km from the Grand Socco.

Medina

The old town of lime-washed white houses and alleys between the Grand Socco, the square that separates it from the newer city, and the Kasbah, the fortress above it, where the Sultan's Palace is now given over to the arts of Morocco. It suits riads and guest houses, walking and a first visit.

Car and parking

Tanger Parking runs closed car parks at the Kasbah (Kasbah 1 and Kasbah 2, on Rue de la Kasbah) and at Bab El Marsa on Avenue Mohammed VI, open 24 hours a day. It publishes no tariff for them, so ask at the gate or ask the riad where its guests park.

City centre

The newer city beyond the Grand Socco, around Place de France and Boulevard Pasteur, with the Cervantes theatre of 1913, which the national tourist office names among the signs of the city's Spanish influence, and the Mendoubia gardens beside the Grand Socco. It suits a first visit without much driving, shops and restaurants, and a month in a flat.

Car and parking

The 2022 parking decree puts the streets around the Iberia underground car park in the paid zone, where blue-zone meters cost 3 DH for an hour and 20 DH for 24 hours. The car park, open 24 hours, sells a 60 DH day pass and an 800 DH monthly pass.

Corniche

The bay front along Avenue Mohammed VI, with the city's main beach of fine sand right in the centre, a landscaped shoreline lined with cafés and restaurants, and Tanja Marina Bay, which the port calls Morocco's first urban marina, at the foot of the medina. It suits a beach stay, sea views and evenings out.

Car and parking

Tanger Parking's underground car parks on the Corniche and at Place des Nations are open 24 hours; Place des Nations sells a 60 DH day pass and an 800 DH monthly pass. The streets around them are paid blue-zone parking.

Malabata

The eastern end of the bay along the Route de Malabata, with its own beach, and further east Cape Malabata, with a lighthouse and a castle built in the early 20th century, one of the sights the national tourist office lists for Tangier. It suits a beach stay a few kilometres from the centre, with a car.

Car and parking

The city's 2022 parking decree lists part of the Route de Malabata among the paid streets around the Corniche car parks; beyond it, ask the host about parking. The Grand Socco is about 4 km away by road.

Cap Spartel

The Atlantic headland west of the city, at the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar and the north-westernmost point of Africa, with its lighthouse; to the south, the Caves of Hercules are carved into the massif, and Achakar beach lies about 1 km from them. It suits a villa or hotel stay with a car, away from the city.

No parking scheme was found for this coast, so ask the host about parking. The drive from the Grand Socco is about 13 km, and the car makes every trip into town.

Is there a tourist tax in Tangier?
