Where to stay in Sri Lanka

Negombo, on the west coast at the mouth of its lagoon, is the nearest city to the airport, known for long sandy beaches and fishing. Colombo, about 33 km south of the airport by road, is the executive and judicial capital and the financial centre.

Inland, Sigiriya and Dambulla form the Cultural Triangle: a rock fortress on a granite column about 180 m high, and the largest cave temple complex in the country. Kandy, the last royal capital, lies in the hills with the Temple of the Tooth Relic. Beyond it the hill country climbs to Nuwara Eliya, at 1,868 m the coolest part of Sri Lanka and its main tea area, and to Ella, a small town among cloud forest and tea plantations.

On the south coast, Galle Fort is a walled town built by the Portuguese and the Dutch and a UNESCO World Heritage Site; Unawatuna, about 6 km away, is known for its beach and corals, and Mirissa, about 34 km along the coast, for its beach, nightlife and whale watching.

A foreign licence is not enough on its own. UK travel advice names a 1949 international driving permit plus a Sri Lankan recognition permit from the Automobile Association of Ceylon, and adds that the hire company will usually help; GetCar's guide Driving in Sri Lanka with a Rental Car: the Temporary Licence, Expressways, Tolls and Road Conditions describes the temporary licence issued at the airport (via GetCar). UK advice also recommends a hire company registered with the Sri Lanka Tourist Board and holding a Safe & Secure certificate.

On the road, UK travel advice warns of erratic driving and frequent accidents, particularly at night, of pedestrians and animals, of security checkpoints on main roads, and of closures around government and military sites in Colombo for VIP convoys. Heavy rains and landslips can close roads in the monsoon.

Parking is a question for the place to stay. Colombo Municipal Council manages roadside parking under by-laws gazetted in July 2017, but the rules and prices could not be verified as of September 2026, and no official rules were found for the other towns. The tourism authority's guest house guidelines score secure parking as a grading point, so ask whether a space comes with the room before booking.

VAT has been 18% since 1 January 2024. The Tourism Development Levy, in place since 2003, is 1% of a licensed establishment's turnover, or 0.5% for businesses with up to LKR 12 million a year; it is charged to the business, not per guest, and its rules count service charges of up to 10% separately from a hotel's sales. Compare totals that include every charge on the bill.

Under section 48 of the Tourism Act No. 38 of 2005, tourist accommodation must be registered with the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority: hotels, guest houses, home stay units, tourist rented houses, rental apartments and bungalows among them. The authority lists registered guest houses, rented homes, rented apartments and home stays on srilanka.travel, and runs a hotline on 1912. UK travel advice reports thefts from hotels and guesthouses, so store belongings safely.

Apply for the ETA before flying. Since 25 May 2026 it has been free for 30 days for nationals of 40 countries, the UK, the US and 12 EU states among them, and costs USD 50 online for most others. Passports must be valid for at least 6 months after arrival, according to UK travel advice.

Book the rooms in the order of the loop and keep drives short in the hills: GetCar's guide notes that hill-country distances take far longer than the kilometres suggest (via GetCar). In the monsoon, check road conditions before booking a base in the hills, and ask the hotel about sea conditions, since UK advice says many beaches have dangerous surf or rip tides at certain times of the year.
