Where to stay in Sofia

The centre runs from Sveta Nedelya down Vitosha Boulevard to the National Palace of Culture, with Vitosha mountain filling the view to the south. It suits a first visit on foot, with the M4 metro to the airport.

Oborishte, east of the centre, is a residential district around the Doctor's Garden, with the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral on its edge, about 2 km from the centre. Lozenets, south of it beside South Park, has apartment blocks and hotels about 5 km from the centre by road.

Boyana and Dragalevtsi sit at the foot of Vitosha on the southern edge, with the medieval Boyana Church in Boyana, about 9 and 10 km from the centre. Mladost, in the south east, is a district of apartment blocks around Business Park Sofia, about 9 km from the airport.

Bulgaria drives on the right, and motorways and main roads outside towns need an e-vignette: since 1 August 2026 a car pays EUR 5.30 a day, EUR 10 a week or EUR 19.90 a month. The centre lies in the hourly paid parking zones. The city adopted a reform that took effect on paper on 5 January 2026: EUR 2.00 an hour in the Blue zone every day from 09:00 to 21:00, EUR 1.00 in the Green zone from Monday to Saturday, a weekend zone at EUR 0.50 and wider zones. In March 2026 the Supreme Administrative Court suspended the price rise and the extension of the zones, and the city said it would not bring them in for now. The prices in force in September 2026 could not be confirmed from an official page, so read the zone sign before leaving the car.

Sofia's Urban Mobility Centre promotes the Sofia Plus app for paying and runs park and ride car parks on the edge of the city, among them Vasil Levski Stadium, Business Park, Tsarigradsko shose and James Boucher, with live free spaces on its website. SMS parking in Bulgarian cities is set up for Bulgarian numbers, so a foreign phone needs the app or a machine.

In winter, from 1 December to the end of February, Sofia runs a low-emission zone aimed at the oldest cars. For Boyana, Dragalevtsi and Lozenets no official parking source turned up, so a place with its own space is the safe choice.

Sofia charges a municipal tourist tax on each overnight stay, and the host must show it separately on the bill. Under the ordinance in force since 1 January 2026 it is EUR 0.51 a night at 1 star and in registered guest rooms and apartments, EUR 0.77 at 2 stars, EUR 1.02 at 3, EUR 1.28 at 4 and EUR 1.53 at 5.

Since 1 October 2019 every host, private guest rooms and guest apartments included, has reported guests to the Ministry of Tourism's Unified Tourism Information System. The register records the name as in the identity document, date of birth, citizenship and the document number, so expect to show a passport or ID card on arrival.

Bulgaria has been in the Schengen area since 1 January 2025 and uses the EU Entry/Exit System. The euro replaced the lev on 1 January 2026, at EUR 1 = 1.95583 lev.

Decide first how much the car will stay parked. For days in the centre on foot and a car only for Rila or Plovdiv, a flat with its own space, or a base near one of the park and ride car parks, saves searching the zones. For walking on Vitosha, Boyana and Dragalevtsi put the mountain at the door.

For a week with day trips on the motorways, the weekly e-vignette at EUR 10 covers the car; ask the rental company first whether it already has one.
