Where to stay in Sharjah
Sharjah's areas differ in what sits outside the door, from the waterfront and the old town to a city beach, a Dubai border district and an east-coast bay, and in the drive: the old town is about 19 km from Sharjah International by road, Khor Fakkan about 103 km.

How the areas differ
Al Majaz, also called Downtown Sharjah, is a mixed-use district with City Centre Sharjah, Al Noor Island, Al Majaz Waterfront, Al Montazah Parks and Al Qasba, a canal-side waterfront with homes and a cultural quarter. It is about 22 km from Sharjah International by road and about 5 km from the old town.
The Heart of Sharjah is the old town, being restored to its 1950s state by Shurooq with the emirate's heritage institute, museums department and art foundation, and proposed for UNESCO World Heritage status. Al Khan, a southern suburb on the bay that marks the border with Dubai, has the Sharjah Aquarium and Al Khan Beach, 600 metres of sand with a swimming area and water sports.
Al Nahda straddles the border: the Sharjah side lies around the Sahara Centre, and the Dubai Metro stations Al Nahda and Stadium are across the line, about 8 km by road from Dubai International. Khor Fakkan, an exclave on the Gulf of Oman surrounded by Fujairah, has a container port and a 3-kilometre crescent beach, about 103 km from the airport.
Staying with a rental car
Sharjah Municipality sells street parking by the ticket: AED 2 for one hour, AED 5 for two, AED 8 for three and AED 12 for five. The SMS service on 5566 needs a UAE mobile number from Etisalat or du, so a visitor pays at the machine. Since 1 July 2026 every zone of Sharjah, Kalba, Khor Fakkan and Al Dhaid charges from 8:00 to midnight, and Fridays and public holidays are free except in the blue-sign zones, which charge every day; no ticket costs AED 150 and overstaying AED 100 (via GetCar).
The malls and the corniche car parks at Al Majaz and Al Buhaira are the easy places to leave a car (via GetCar). For a hotel or apartment elsewhere, ask about parking before booking, since no official source lists it by area.
A stay in Sharjah with trips into Dubai crosses the Salik gates at Al Mamzar on Al Ittihad Road, which charge AED 4 to 6 a crossing and are billed by the rental company, and Dubai runs its own parking tariff (via GetCar). Khor Fakkan is reached on the toll-free Sharjah-Khor Fakkan Road through five tunnels across the Hajar mountains. GetCar's guide Driving in Sharjah covers the airport desks, the Salik gates, the speed limits, the dry emirate, parking and fines.
What the fees and rules mean for a guest
Sharjah Municipality charges hotels and hotel apartments a fee of 10% of their revenue from rooms, food and other services, and its guidelines tell them to show it on the guest's invoice with the service charge. VAT is 5% on hotel apartments and serviced units. A per-night tourism fee on hotel rooms, of the kind Dubai charges, could not be confirmed from an official Sharjah source and is unverified as of September 2026, so check what a quoted total includes.
Holiday homes follow Executive Council Resolution No. 25 of 2021: each needs an operating permit from the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority, renewed yearly, and pays an occupancy fee of AED 15 per night per house when classed deluxe and AED 10 when classed tourist, up to the equivalent of 30 nights. The home must be let whole, not room by room, carry a sign in Arabic and English with the operator's details and class, display the house rules and the emergency route, and may not charge extra for electricity, water, gas or telecoms. Advertising a home at a class other than its approved one is a violation.
Sharjah is a dry emirate: UK travel advice says drinking or possessing alcohol is illegal there, and a Dubai tourist liquor licence is for use in Dubai only (via GetCar), so a duty-free bottle from the airport has no place in the car or the room.
When to book what
Check entry first. British citizens get a free visa on arrival and EU citizens a visa waiver, each for 90 days in any 180; the EU agreement does not cover Ireland. US citizens get a no-fee visa on arrival for 30 days. UK travel advice, updated in July 2026, warns of possible flight cancellations and airspace closures across the Middle East, so read it before paying for a stay that cannot be cancelled.
For an early flight from Dubai International, Al Nahda is the shortest drive; for Sharjah International, the Heart of Sharjah is about 19 km by road. Khor Fakkan is a separate trip across the mountains, better booked as its own night than as a day return from the city.
