A month in Sarajevo

Bosnia and Herzegovina lets citizens of the countries on its visa-free list, the EU states, the UK and the US among them, stay up to 90 days in a period of six months from first entry; the Service for Foreigners' Affairs counts it as 90 days in any 180. Beyond that a visitor needs a temporary residence permit, issued for up to one year. UK travel advice tells British visitors the application needs a UK criminal record document and that the passport should be stamped on entry and exit, because border guards check the stamps against the 90 days. Bosnia and Herzegovina is not in the Schengen area, so days there are not part of a Schengen count.

Accommodation providers register their foreign guests. A month in a flat rented from a registered host follows the same rule; a month with friends means the visitor or the friend reports the stay to the Service for Foreigners' Affairs or the police within 48 hours of entry, since it lasts more than three days. UK travel advice gives 72 hours for registration and points to the nearest field centre of the Service when the accommodation does not do it.

Hosts must register with the Tourist Association of Sarajevo Canton. Ask to see that registration before paying a deposit for a month. The Service for Foreigners' Affairs has field offices in Sarajevo and East Sarajevo, among other towns.

In commercial accommodation the canton tax is charged per person per night: 3 KM in 2025, and 4 KM in the festival periods from 1 July to 31 August, 1 to 5 January and 25 to 31 December. A month in July therefore carries the higher rate on every night. A 2026 decision was not found as of September 2026. Private household hosts pay a yearly lump sum of 50 KM per bed instead of a nightly charge, so the law sets no per-night tax for their guests. We found no long-stay exemption; the canton tourism law could not be read, so treat that as unverified. The host pays the tax into the canton's account for the Tourist Association.

The centre around Ferhadija and Marijin Dvor suits a month in the city, with the promenade streets and their shops and cafés. Ilidža suits a month with a car: it is about 3 km from the airport, the tram runs into town, and the protected-area authority lists paid car parks at the Velika aleja and Vrelo Bosne. The avenue itself, 3.5 km of plane trees planted in 1892, is walked or cycled to the springs of the Bosna.

Vratnik and Bistrik are old quarters about 1 km from the bazaar, but we found no official parking source there, so a month with a car needs a host's space. For a winter month, Jahorina counts about 170 ski days a year, and winter equipment is compulsory on the roads from 1 November to 1 April.

Airbnb calls 28 nights or more a monthly stay. It charges the first month up front and releases it to the host 24 hours after check-in, then charges each later month 10 days before it starts. How other platforms label long stays in Sarajevo was not verified as of September 2026.

Booking a hotel month in July or August without counting the festival rate of 4 KM a night.

Paying for parking by card. The tourism board says parking fees are usually paid in cash.

Staying with friends and skipping registration. Stays of more than three days outside accommodation services must be reported within 48 hours of entry.

Leaving the passport unstamped. UK travel advice warns that border guards count the 90 days from the stamps and may fine a visitor without one.
