About Rhodes

Rhodes town and the airport sit at the north end of the island, and Lindos is about 50 km down the east coast. Since April 2026 a car needs a permit to enter the Old Town, so pick the base and the parking together.

Since 1 October 2025 each short-term rental needs smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, a first aid kit, a guide to emergency numbers and civil liability insurance (Law 5170/2025). Source

Since 14 April 2026 no vehicle may enter the medieval town without a valid entry permit; supply vehicles from 06:00 to 09:00; police checks every day. Source

Rhodes Old Town

The walled medieval town of the Knights, with small hotels and guesthouses in stone buildings and the museums, lanes and restaurants a few minutes apart on foot. It suits a city break for travellers who plan to walk more than drive. With heavy luggage and a car, the new town is the easier base.

Car and parking

Since 14 April 2026 no vehicle may enter without a valid entry permit, and the permit categories cover residents, taxis, suppliers and vehicles that hotels contract, not a guest's rental car. Park at the free Akantia car park by the old commercial harbour, with a free minibus every 20 minutes, or on a paid street space in the new town. Ask the hotel how luggage reaches the door.

Rhodes New Town (Mandraki and Elli)

The town north of the walls, with the seafront, Mandraki harbour and Elli beach, and the Old Town under 1 km away. It suits families, first visits and a longer stay in a working town rather than a resort.

Car and parking

Street spaces are paid: scan the QR code on a meter or use parking.rhodes.gr, where the plate is the one detail required and the time can be extended from a phone. The free Akantia car park and its minibus are the alternative. In June 2026 the municipality put plans to pedestrianise streets around Plateia Kyprou out to consultation.

Ixia and Ialysos

The west coast between the town and the airport. The municipality describes Ialysos, 8 km from Rhodes town, as a town whose economy rests on tourism, with many large hotels and the island's two conference centres. It suits short stays and early or late flights.

Car and parking

No official parking source for Ixia or Ialysos was found as of September 2026. Ialysos stretches along the main road from Rhodes to Kameiros; ask the hotel whether it has its own car park.

Faliraki

The resort on its own bay on the north-east coast, 14 km from Rhodes town, and the tourist centre of the Kallithea district according to the municipality. It suits a beach holiday with restaurants and the sea on foot.

Lindos and Pefkos

Lindos is one of the island's most important traditional settlements, on a narrow strip of land below its acropolis, with small hotels, rooms and villas. Pefkos, about 6 km away by road, sits on its own bay. Both suit a slower week with day trips by car.

Car and parking

No official parking source for Lindos or Pefkos was found as of September 2026. Lindos is a listed traditional settlement on a narrow strip of land, so ask the host where the car goes before booking. The airport is about 50 km away by road.

The south (Kiotari, Gennadi, Prasonisi)

The emptiest part of the island: South Rhodes has 11.4 people per km2, against 83.7 for Rhodes as a whole. Kiotari and Gennadi sit on the south-east coast and Prasonisi at the southern tip. It suits travellers who want space and plan to drive every day.

Is there a tourist tax in Rhodes?

Greece charges a climate crisis resilience fee per night and per room or property. From April to October a short-term rental pays EUR 8, or EUR 15 for a detached house over 80 m2, and hotels EUR 2 to EUR 15 by stars; from November to March EUR 0.50 to EUR 4. Hotels and professional hosts also add the municipal visitor fee on the rent, which the Rhodes council set at 0.75%.
