A month in Reggio Calabria

A month in Reggio Calabria costs EUR 5 in tourist tax, because the cap is five nights a year in the same property. Parking is the larger monthly number, and there is a subscription for it.

What a month means legally here

Italian law calls a home let for up to 30 days a short let, a locazione breve, and Reggio Calabria's regulation brings short lets under DL 50/2017 inside the tourist tax. The flat carries the national identification code, the CIN, outside the building and in every listing, the comune's tax portal asks hosts for the national or regional code, and the host registers each guest with the police within 24 hours.

A lease of a home for more than 30 days in the year must be registered with the Agenzia delle Entrate within 30 days of signing, and a lease that should be registered and is not is void. A holiday month is a tourist let under the Civil Code and has to be in writing. A transitory lease, up to 18 months, is for a documented need such as work or study, uses a standard form, and becomes an ordinary long lease if those conditions are not met.

The regulation charges the tax for at most five consecutive nights in the calendar year, in the same property, so a month in a flat, a B&B or a two-star hotel costs EUR 5 per person and a month in a four-star hotel EUR 12.50. Whoever collects the rent, a platform included, answers for paying it over and charges it to the guest. Which rate band a short let falls into is unverified as of September 2026, because the 2016 rate table predates the 2024 regulation that brought short lets in.

The areas that suit a month

Gallico and Catona, north of the city, and the blocks around Reggio Calabria Centrale are the three that suit a month. Gallico and Catona have their own beaches, sit outside the paid-parking zones altogether and cut the run to the Villa San Giovanni ferry to about 4 km; the station end has the trains, the airport buses and the coaches.

For parking, the ATAM app sells a monthly subscription at EUR 75.00 that gives unlimited time in every paid area, Lungomare Falcomata included, and it is not restricted to residents. A seven-day pass costs EUR 20.00 and a year EUR 500.00. The residents' permit, free apart from a EUR 30 administrative charge, is for people on the register and covers one household car in its own zone only, so it is not a route for a visitor.

An electric, hydrogen or plug-in hybrid car can be exempted from the charge on application, with a EUR 25 administrative charge; a hybrid, mild hybrid, CNG or LPG car gets a reduced rate of EUR 200. Both are worth checking against a month at EUR 75.00 before applying.

The paperwork

Deposit: for a home let as a dwelling the deposit may not exceed three months' rent under article 11 of Law 392/1978. Whether that cap binds a holiday let governed by the Civil Code is unverified as of September 2026, so agree the deposit in writing.

Every guest shows an identity document or passport at check-in and the host registers them with the police. A landlord who houses a non-EU national notifies the police within 48 hours with the passport details.

EU citizens staying more than three months register with the comune's registry office, with proof of work, study, or sufficient means and health cover. Visitors from outside the EU, including those from the United Kingdom and the United States, may stay 90 days in any 180 across the Schengen area, and the EU Entry/Exit System has registered their short stays since 10 April 2026.

What platforms call long stays

Vrbo's monthly-stays page, as archived in June 2026, describes stays of 28 nights or more and says selected homes offer a discount for them. Agoda lets partners offer long-stay promotions on bookings of more than 28 days and permits stays of up to 90 days.

The platform label does not settle the legal status. Up to 30 days, check the CIN on the listing. Beyond 30 days, ask for a written lease and its registration with the Agenzia delle Entrate. Compare and book on this page once that is clear.

Pitfalls

A listing with no CIN, or without the regional code beside it.

A lease of more than 30 days that is never registered: it is void.

Paying tourist tax for more than five nights. The regulation caps it at five consecutive nights in the calendar year in the same property, so ask for the receipt.

Buying parking by the hour for a month. The ATAM monthly subscription at EUR 75.00 covers every paid area and is open to visitors.

A deposit above three months' rent on a lease of a home, and miscounting Schengen days.
