How the areas differ
The centre around Georgiou Square is the commercial heart of the city, about 3 km by road from the ferry terminal on Akti Dymaion. Above it, Ano Poli is the upper town around the castle, about 2 km from the square by road, with public stairways climbing the hill from the streets below.
Rio, about 9 km north-east, is a suburb at the Peloponnese end of the Rio-Antirrio bridge, with the University of Patras campus and the Casino Rio. Vrachneika, about 11 km south-west of the centre on the gulf, is a seaside suburb on the road towards Pyrgos.
Staying with a rental car

The historic centre is a controlled parking zone on weekdays from 08:00 to 14:00 and 17:00 to 21:00 and on Saturdays from 08:00 to 14:00. A parking card costs EUR 0.30, as the municipality's page stated on 4 October 2026, from kiosks and shops, or the free app Patra Parking issues the time; each card is valid for one or two hours depending on the street, shown on the signs at each junction. The municipality allows one card in the morning period and one in the evening period, after which the car must leave the zone.
That makes street parking a short-stop arrangement. The municipality lists three free open-air car parks, all in the port zone: south of the open-air pool of the Patras Swimming Club, the Georgios Kalentzotis car park, and the car park south of the lighthouse. Free municipal buses run from the car parks via Gounari to Agios Nikolaos pier, under 1 km in a straight line from Georgiou Square, from 07:00 to 21:30, every 15 minutes and every 8 minutes at peak times. The pier is in the centre; the ferry terminal on Akti Dymaion is a separate place, about 3 km from the square by road. For Ano Poli, Rio and Vrachneika no parking rules were found, so ask the host whether a space comes with the stay.
The Rio-Antirrio bridge costs EUR 15.90 per crossing for a car under 2 m high, EUR 24.70 with a caravan or trailer over 2 m. GetCar's car rental page for Patras covers the hire.
Tax and registration rules for a guest
Greece charges a climate resilience fee per night and per room or property, paid by the guest before departure. Article 44 of the Code of indirect taxes (Law 5177/2025) sets the amounts, unchanged for 2026: from April to October EUR 8 in a short-term rental, EUR 15 in a detached house over 80 m2 or a tourist villa, EUR 2 in rented rooms and EUR 2 to 15 in hotels by stars; from November to March between EUR 0.50 and EUR 4.
Hotels and professional hosts also charge the municipal visitors' fee on the price of stays under six months: 0.5% under national law. No decision by the Municipality of Patras raising it to 0.75% was found on Diavgeia. Private hosts who let one or two properties do not charge it.
Every short-term rental must show its 11-digit AMA on every platform and advert; licensed properties show a 16-digit ΕΣΛ or a 7-digit ΜΑΓ number. Since 1 October 2025, Law 5170/2025 has required smoke detectors, a fire extinguisher, a first aid kit, a guide to emergency numbers and civil liability insurance. Patras is not under the registration ban that applies in central Athens and Thessaloniki.
When to book what
For a sailing to Italy, a night in the centre keeps the drive to the terminal short. Araxos airport is a Hellenic Air Force base that also takes civilian flights; its 2026 civilian schedule is unverified as of September 2026, so check with the airline before planning around it. From Araxos, Vrachneika is the closest of these areas, about 28 km by road.
The parking zone is not in force on Saturday afternoons or Sundays, which suits a weekend arrival in the centre. The climate fee falls from EUR 8 to EUR 2 a night in a short-term rental from November to March. Compare prices on this page before booking.
