Naples runs a patchwork of traffic zones, each district with its own hours, and a city tow-truck service. Choosing a base means choosing which zone the car meets, and knowing it stays on the mainland when the trip turns to Capri.

Airport
Naples Capodichino (NAP), inside the city. The rental desks are on the first floor of arrivals, and the cars about 700 m away by a free shuttle every 15 minutes from 07:30 to 23:30. Source
Taxi from the airport
Fixed fares per car on the 2024 sheet: EUR 21 to the central station and the historic centre, EUR 24 to the port and EUR 28.50 to the seafront hotels. Source
Tourist tax
From 1 May 2026, per person per night: hotels EUR 4.00 to 6.00 by stars, other lodgings EUR 5.50, short lets EUR 6.00. Guests aged 14 and under are exempt, and the tax stops after 14 consecutive nights. Source
Licensed stays
Every hotel, B&B and short-let flat must have a national identification code (CIN), shown outside the building and in every listing. Source
Check-in
Hosts may accept only guests with an identity document or passport, and register each guest with the police within 24 hours. Source
Centro Antico ZTL
Camera gates on Via del Sole, 09:00 to 22:00 Monday to Thursday and to 02:00 from Friday to Sunday, and on Via Miroballo, Via Duomo and Via Santa Sofia, 09:00 to 17:00 every day. Hotels, garages and repair shops may bring in their customers' cars. Source
Chiaia night zone
The Belledonne, Martiri and Poerio ZTL in Chiaia is closed to unauthorised cars every day from 19:00 to 07:00. Source
Towing
The city runs 25 tow trucks. To find a towed car, call 081 7957111; release needs the driving licence, the registration document and the insurance certificate. Source
Monthly stays
Up to 30 days a flat is a short let. A home lease of more than 30 days in a year must be registered with the Agenzia delle Entrate within 30 days. Source

Centro Storico

The UNESCO old town of Spaccanapoli and Via dei Tribunali, with churches, pizzerias and street life. It suits a first visit on foot, and it is loud and crowded.

Car and parking

Inside the Centro Antico ZTL, gates from 09:00 to 17:00, and to 22:00 or 02:00 on Via del Sole. Hotels and garages may bring in their customers' cars. Via dei Tribunali is a pedestrian area with a camera gate.

Toledo and the Quartieri Spagnoli

Via Toledo, the shopping street, and the dense grid of the Spanish Quarter above it. It suits visitors who want to be central, and it is busy day and night.

Car and parking

The Tarsia, Pignasecca and Dante ZTL, west of Via Toledo around Piazza Dante, is closed every day from 09:00 to 18:00; the Centro Antico ZTL begins east of Via Toledo.

Chiaia

The district between the Villa Comunale gardens and Via dei Mille, with shops and bars. It suits a calmer base near the sea and longer stays.

Car and parking

The Belledonne, Martiri and Poerio ZTL closes every day from 19:00 to 07:00. On Saturdays, Via dei Mille, Via Filangieri, Via Morelli and nearby streets close from 10:00 to 13:30 and 16:00 to 22:00.

Santa Lucia and the seafront

Via Partenope, Castel dell'Ovo and the Borgo Marinari on the water, with views of Vesuvius. It suits a short stay by the sea.

Car and parking

The Borgo Marinari by Castel dell'Ovo is a pedestrian area all day, with a camera gate. The Chiaia night ZTL starts a few streets west.

Vomero

The residential district on the hill above Chiaia, with Castel Sant'Elmo and views over the bay, on Metro Line 1. It suits longer stays.

Car and parking

Nine streets around Via Luca Giordano are closed to private cars Monday to Saturday from 16:00 to 20:00, with exemptions the ordinance lists, and part of Via Luca Giordano is a pedestrian area.

Posillipo

The green hill west of the centre, with villas and views of the bay. It suits a quieter base with a car.

Outside the central ZTLs. Two lanes down to the sea become summer ZTLs: Via Ferdinando Russo from April to September, 08:00 to 19:00 and daily in July and August, and Via Marechiaro, closed from 16 May to 27 September in 2026.

Questions

How much is the tourist tax in Naples?

From 1 May 2026, per person per night: EUR 4.00 to 6.00 in hotels by stars, EUR 5.50 in other lodgings such as B&Bs and EUR 6.00 in short-let flats. Guests aged 14 and under pay nothing, and it stops after 14 consecutive nights.

Can a guest drive to a hotel in the Naples historic centre?

Hotels, garages and repair shops are among the categories whose customers' cars may enter the Centro Antico ZTL, so ask the hotel to arrange it before arrival. Without that, the gates bar the way from 09:00, until 17:00 on three of them and until 22:00 or 02:00 on Via del Sole.

Can a rental car go to Capri?

No. A 2026 regional decree bars rental and foreign-plated cars from boarding for Capri from 30 March to 2 November. Leave the car on the mainland and take the boat.

Can a rental car drive the Amalfi Coast road?

On the days its plate allows. On the SS163 from Vietri to Positano, from 10:00 to 18:00, odd final digits are banned on odd dates and even ones on even dates: every day from 1 August to 30 September 2026 and at weekends in October. Rental cars are not exempt.
