Where to stay in Milos

Milos is about 23 km across, with the port at Adamas about 6 km from the airport. Plaka keeps its centre for residents' cars, and one rental company keeps its standard cars off the western and eastern sides of the island.

How the areas differ

Adamas is the harbour town and the island's cultural and commercial centre, founded by Cretan refugees in 1841. Plaka, the chief town, sits on its rock above the gulf about 5 km by road from the port, with the village of Trypiti beside it and the villages of Triovasalos and Pera Triovasalos on the road between the two.

Pollonia lies on a bay in the north-east, about 10 km from Adamas. On the south coast, Paliochori and Provatas lie near the airport, about 6 and 8 km away by road.

No cars can enter the lanes of Plaka, and since 1 May 2026, under council decision 76/2024, parking in the centre of the village is allowed only for permanent residents. The municipality issues three kinds of annual card: pink for residents without a space, blue for owners of a space, and yellow for accommodation that provides its guests with private, granted or rented parking, bearing the accommodation's name. Cars with blue or yellow cards may not use the communal spaces. A guest with a car should ask a Plaka host whether the property holds a yellow card and where its parking is.

The municipality is looking for more space. On 5 June 2026 it tendered leases of open land for car parks in 27 places, among them three sites in Adamas, three in Pollonia, five in Trypiti and several in Triovasalos, with leases for many sites running to the end of 2027. The outcome was not found as of September 2026.

One Milos rental company, with offices at the port, the airport and Pollonia, does not allow standard cars on the western and eastern sides of the island and gives them no insurance there; its 4x4 and SUV cars may use the unpaved roads drawn in yellow on its map, as long as they stay on the road, and no car may go off road. The same company lets its cars visit Kimolos, with the renter fully responsible and its insurance options invalid there. No official list of the beaches that need a 4x4 was found, so the contract and its map are the guide. GetCar's car rental page for Milos lists cars for the island.

What the tourist tax and registration rules mean for a guest

Greece charges a climate crisis resilience fee per night for each room or property, and Milos has no rate of its own: one national table applies, set by Law 5162/2024 and now in article 44 of the Code of indirect taxes (Law 5177/2025), unchanged for 2026. From April to October a short-term rental pays EUR 8 a night, or EUR 15 for a detached house over 80 m2; rooms to let pay EUR 2 and hotels EUR 2 to 15 by stars. From November to March a short-term rental pays EUR 2, or EUR 4 for a detached house over 80 m2. The host charges it after the stay and before departure, on a separate receipt.

A municipal visitor fee on the rent, borne by the guest and shown on the receipt, comes on top. The national rate is 0.5%, and the Milos council raised it to 0.75% by decision 45/2025 of 13 May 2025, by majority, in force three months after publication. Private hosts with one or two properties do not charge it.

Every short-term rental must be in the AADE registry and show its 11-digit AMA on every platform and advert, and the host declares each stay; licensed properties show a 16-digit ΕΣΛ or a 7-digit ΜΑΓ number instead. Since 1 October 2025, Law 5170/2025 has required smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, a first aid kit and civil liability insurance, with a EUR 5,000 fine for a host who fails the rules.

The Civil Aviation Authority sets the airport's hours by season. In summer 2025 it opened every day from 07:00 to 20:15 until 14 September and from 07:00 to 18:00 until 25 October; in winter 2024 to 2025 it opened from 08:30 to 14:15. The 2026 hours were unverified as of September 2026, so check them before booking a first or last night around a flight.

The climate fee drops on 1 November, from EUR 8 to EUR 2 a night for a short-term rental. At Sarakiniko, about 4 km from Adamas, the municipality reported lifeguard cover, signs, buoys and a marked swimming zone in summer 2026.

Questions

Is it better to stay in Adamas or Plaka?

Adamas for the port, the airport about 6 km away and no residents-only parking scheme on record; Plaka for the old lanes on foot, since its centre is reserved for residents' cars from 1 May 2026.

Can a guest park in Plaka?

Only where the accommodation has its own, granted or rented parking and a yellow card. The centre of the village is for permanent residents' cars since 1 May 2026.

Which beaches need a 4x4?

No official list was found. One rental company bars standard cars from the western and eastern sides of the island and lets 4x4 and SUV cars use the unpaved roads marked on its map, so check the contract.

Can a Milos rental car go to Kimolos?

One company allows it, with the renter fully responsible and its insurance options invalid on Kimolos. Check the contract of the company chosen.

Is there a tourist tax in Milos?

Yes. The national climate resilience fee is charged per night for each room or property, EUR 8 for a short-term rental from April to October and EUR 2 from November to March, plus a municipal visitor fee of 0.75% of the rent unless the host is a private individual with one or two properties.
