Airports
Milan Linate (LIN), about 7 km from the Duomo, with metro line M4 to San Babila in about 15 minutes. Milan Malpensa (MXP), about 52 km by road, with the Malpensa Express at EUR 15 to any Milan station. Source
Tourist tax
From 1 April 2026, per person per night: hotels EUR 3.00 (one star) to EUR 12.00 (five stars); holiday apartments, B&Bs, room lets and short lets EUR 9.50; hostels and campsites EUR 3.00. Under-18s are exempt. Rates set for the year 2026. Source
National code (CIN)
Every licensed stay, hotel or short-let flat, has a national CIN shown outside the building and in every listing, in force since 2 November 2024. Lombardy also assigns its own regional code, the CIR. Source
ID at check-in
Guests show an ID card or passport, and the host registers each one with the police within 24 hours. Source
Self check-in
An Interior Ministry circular, upheld by the Council of State in November 2025, requires the host to verify each guest in person or by a video link at the door. A code sent after an ID upload does not meet it. Source

Duomo and Centro Storico

The old centre: the Duomo, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II and La Scala within a few streets. It suits a first visit on foot and short stays.

Car and parking

Inside Area C, EUR 7.50 per weekday entry. Street parking is capped at two hours per zone, so use an authorised garage inside the zone, where the Area C entry costs EUR 4.50 if the car stays over an hour and parking costs at most EUR 4 an hour.

Brera

Galleries, the Pinacoteca di Brera and small paved streets north of the Duomo. It suits a short stay on foot with quieter evenings than the Duomo square.

Via Brera is on the city's list of Area C addresses, so the weekday charge, the two-hour street limit and the garage rules all apply.

Navigli

The canal quarter around the Darsena and the Naviglio Grande, with bars along the towpaths. It suits evenings out and longer stays; nights are lively.

Corso Buenos Aires, the public gardens and a mix of hotels and flats east of the old ramparts. It suits longer stays close to Centrale.

How much is the Milan tourist tax in 2026?

From 1 April 2026, per person per night: EUR 12 in a five-star hotel, EUR 10 in a four-star, EUR 7 in a three-star, EUR 9.50 in holiday apartments, B&Bs and short lets, and EUR 3 in hostels. Guests under 18 pay nothing. The city set these rates for 2026.

Can a rental car drive into central Milan?

Yes, with an Area C ticket on weekdays from 07:30 to 19:30: EUR 7.50 a day, activated by midnight of the following day, or EUR 4.50 when the car stays more than an hour in an authorised garage inside the zone. Weekends and public holidays are free.

Which Milan area is easiest with a car?

Isola and Porta Nuova, Porta Venezia beyond Corso Venezia, and the Stazione Centrale area are not on the city's list of Area C addresses, so there is no entry charge. For several days, ATM's interchange car parks charge EUR 7.50 for 24 hours.

Can a Milan host leave the keys in a key box?

Not on public land: since January 2026 Milan fines key boxes on lamp posts, signs, fences and gates, and on private structures facing the street, EUR 100 to 400. National rules also require the host to check each guest's ID in person or by video at the door.
