Where to stay in Marrakech
For a driver, Marrakech splits in two. Inside the ramparts the medina is a tangle of lanes and the car stays in a car park by a gate; Guéliz, Hivernage and the Palmeraie lie outside the walls.

How the areas differ
The medina is the old city inside the ramparts: 700 hectares that UNESCO describes as a living historic town with its tangle of lanes, souks and fondouks. At its heart are Jemaa el-Fna, the Koutoubia with its 77 m minaret, and the souks. The medina has many riads, which the national tourist office calls small oriental palaces overlooking a patio.
The Kasbah is the walled district in the south of the medina, entered through the carved gate of Bab Agnaou. It holds the Saadian tombs, the Kasbah Mosque and the ruins of the Badi Palace, about a kilometre from Jemaa el-Fna.
Guéliz and Hivernage lie outside the walls. The tourist office describes both as the modern side of Marrakech, with boutiques and airy avenues; Hivernage is home to the Palais des Congrès. The Palmeraie, the palm grove north of the city whose planting UNESCO attributes to the Almoravids, is about 11 km by road from Jemaa el-Fna.
The airport is close to all of them. The airport authority puts Menara 3 km from the city centre, and the road to Jemaa el-Fna is about 7 km. The nearest sea beach is at Essaouira, about 182 km away.
Staying with a rental car
Plan the car around the medina. GetCar's driving guide advises treating it as a place to walk, arranging parking with the riad or hotel before arriving, and driving the boulevards around the walls instead of into the old town.
The commune has finished three car parks at medina gates: Bab Lkhmis on the north side with 222 places, Bab Ghmat on the east with 160 and Bab Ahmar in the south-east with 80. It lists two larger car parks as projects, a multi-storey one at Arsat Al Maach with 580 places and an underground one under Place du 16 Novembre in Guéliz with 457; neither is described as open.
For guarded parking at the city's parking stations, the commune's fiscal decision sets 2 DH for the day and 4 DH for the night, with night running from 20:00 in winter and 21:00 in summer. Current prices at the new gate car parks could not be found.
Outside the walls, in Guéliz, Hivernage and the Palmeraie, no municipal parking rule or street tariff turned up, so ask the hotel or host whether a space comes with the booking. What the tourist tax and check-in rules mean for a guest
Morocco's taxe de séjour is charged per person per night on top of the room price, and each commune sets its own rate inside national ranges. Marrakech charges 15 DH in a riad, a guest house or a 5-star hotel, 7 DH in a 4-star hotel, 5 DH in a 3-star hotel, 30 DH in a luxury hotel and 20 DH in a house rented to tourists. Children under 12 are exempt, and the invoice must show the tax on its own line.
Riads and guest houses fall under Law 80-14 on tourist accommodation: they need an operating authorisation and carry an official classification, riads from 3 stars to luxury and guest houses from 1 to 5 stars. At check-in each guest shows a passport and signs an individual registration form, the fiche de police; the host sends the data electronically to the national police or the Gendarmerie every day before 8:00.
A separate tourist promotion tax is collected for the national tourist office. Its current amounts are unverified as of September 2026.
When to book what
Book the riad and its parking together. Ask which gate car park the riad uses and how far the walk is with luggage. Book the car for the days outside the city; inside the medina the sights are on foot, and Jemaa el-Fna is under 1 km from Mouassine.
For a first night in the medina, the car can wait. At Menara the airport authority runs the kech.cab desk at the arrivals exit, where a taxi ride is paid in advance at a fixed fare set by the authorities.
