Airport
Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI), 8 km from the city according to Aena, and about 12 km by road to Plaça de Cort in the centre. Source
Tourist tax
Balearic tourist stay tax (Ley 2/2016), per person per night: EUR 1 to 4 by category, EUR 2 in holiday homes. Under 16s exempt, 75% off from 1 November to 30 April, half from the ninth night. Source
Holiday lets
Ley 8/2012: a tourist stay in a home is the whole home for days or weeks, at most 30 nights, never by rooms. Every advert must show the tourist registration number. Source

Real Decreto 933/2021: every guest over 14 signs a registration form with ID details, which the host sends to the police. Source

Palma old town

The cathedral, La Llotja, the Born and the lanes of the old town on foot, with the airport a short drive away. It suits first visits, city breaks and a month with the services of a city. The nearest beach, Can Pere Antoni, is about 2 km away by road.

Car and parking

Twelve ACIRE areas are camera-controlled; hotels and holiday lets inside can get a one-off authorisation for a guest's car. The low-emission zone only restricts cars with no DGT label. Blue ORA spaces in the centre cost EUR 1.45 an hour for 2 hours at most; the roads to the Parc de la Mar and Via Roma car parks are open to all.

Sóller and Port de Sóller

A valley town in the Serra de Tramuntana and its harbour on a round bay. It suits walkers and couples who want mountains and the sea together.

Car and parking

The Sóller tunnel has been toll-free since 2017. Car parks at the Tramuntana viewpoints and villages fill up in summer, and on 12 August 2026 four were closed once full. Local street rules in Sóller were not verified; ask the host about a space.

Pollença and Port de Pollença

The old town of Pollença inland and its port on a wide bay in the north. It suits families, walkers and cyclists, and anyone planning the Formentor peninsula.

Car and parking

From 15 May to 18 October 2026, 10:00 to 22:00, private cars may not drive the Formentor road beyond km 8.7; bus 334 runs every 35 minutes, and there is a park and ride on the Port de Pollença ring road. Street rules in the port were not verified.

Alcúdia

A walled old town, with the beach of the bay of Alcúdia about 3 km away. It suits families and beach holidays with a town to walk to in the evening.

Car and parking

Bus 334 to Cap de Formentor starts in Alcúdia, which saves the drive when the Formentor road is closed to private cars. Alcúdia's own parking rules were not verified as of September 2026.

Santanyí and the south-east coves

A town inland and the small coves and fishing harbours of the south-east, from Cala Figuera to Cala d'Or. It suits couples and slower trips where each beach day starts with a short drive.

Car and parking

From 1 June the street down to Caló des Moro is closed to non-residents: park at the free car park at the Cala Llombards entrance and walk about 1.5 km. The two car parks of Mondragó natural park charge in summer.

How much is the tourist tax in Mallorca?

The Balearic tourist stay tax is charged per person per night: EUR 2 in holiday homes and in one to three star hotels, EUR 3 in four star hotels and EUR 4 in five star hotels, as published by the Balearic tax agency in September 2026. Under 16s pay nothing, the rate drops by 75% from 1 November to 30 April, and it halves from the ninth night of a stay longer than eight nights.

Can a rental car drive into Palma's old town?

Not into the twelve ACIRE restricted areas, which cameras control and only authorised vehicles may enter. Hotels and holiday lets inside can obtain a one-off authorisation for a guest's car, so give them the plate before arrival. The wider low-emission zone only restricts cars with no DGT environmental label.

How long can a holiday let last in Mallorca?

At most 30 nights. Balearic law caps a tourist stay in a home at one month and counts the month as passed after thirty nights. A longer stay is a seasonal lease under the national lease law, with a deposit of two months' rent.

Which Mallorca area suits a first visit with a car?

Palma if the plan is the city on foot, with the car in a car park. Pollença or Alcúdia for the beaches of the northern bays, and Sóller for the Serra de Tramuntana.
