Where to stay in Lesvos

Lesvos is the third largest island in Greece, and its bases lie far apart: from the airport near Mytilene it is about 70 km by road to Molyvos and about 91 km to Skala Eresou.

How the areas differ

Mytilene is the capital and port of the island, about 7 km by road from the airport. Plomari, the second largest town and the only sizable coastal settlement in the south, lies about 43 km from it.

The north coast holds Molyvos, officially Mithymna, a castle town with its agora on the road up to the fortress, and Petra on the bay about 6 km south of it; both are about 60 km from Mytilene. In the south-west, the beach village of Skala Eresou and the inland village of Eresos, the home town of Sappho, lie about 4 km apart and about 88 km from the capital.

The bases lie far apart, so plan the first drive from the airport: about 7 km to Mytilene, 45 km to Plomari, 67 km to Petra, 70 km to Molyvos and 91 km to Skala Eresou. The runway was open around the clock from 2 June to 24 October 2026.

Mytilene is the one place with published parking rules. At the passenger port, the Inter-municipal Port Fund of Lesvos charges for the blue-lined spaces Monday to Saturday from 08:00 to 21:00: EUR 0.50 for half an hour, EUR 1.00 for an hour, EUR 1.50 for two hours and EUR 5.00 for 24 hours, paid at a machine that takes bank cards or with scratch cards from kiosks. Blue lines are free after 21:00, on Sundays and holidays, and white lines are free. On the quayside, scratch cards for up to two hours apply Monday to Friday 08:00 to 21:00 and Saturday 08:00 to 15:00, and the port's 24-hour and monthly cards are not valid there. The port authority enforces the rules under the Road Traffic Code.

In the west, West Lesvos has car park projects under way. It signed a EUR 500,000 contract for the Mithymna car park in 2023, tendered a lease for a car park in Skala Eresou in December 2024, and in August 2026 secured land at the former Petra army camp, with a plan to turn the seafront football pitch into a large car park. None of these was verified as finished, so ask the host where to park before arrival. GetCar's car rental page for Lesvos lists cars for the island.

What the tourist tax and registration rules mean for a guest

Greece charges a climate crisis resilience fee per night for each room or property, and Lesvos has no rate of its own: one national table applies, set by Law 5162/2024 and now in article 44 of the Code of indirect taxes (Law 5177/2025), unchanged for 2026. From April to October a short-term rental pays EUR 8 a night, or EUR 15 for a detached house over 80 m2; rooms to let pay EUR 2 and hotels EUR 2 to 15 by stars. From November to March a short-term rental pays EUR 2, or EUR 4 for a detached house over 80 m2. The host charges it after the stay and before departure, on a separate receipt.

A municipal visitor fee on the rent, borne by the guest, comes on top. The national rate is 0.5%, and councils may raise it to 0.75%. In West Lesvos, which covers Molyvos, Petra and Eresos, the council decided unanimously on 29 December 2025 to keep 0.5% without adjustment, against a proposal of 0.75%. For the municipality of Mytilene, which covers the capital and Plomari, no decision raising it was found as of September 2026. Private hosts with one or two properties do not charge it.

Every short-term rental must be in the AADE registry and show its 11-digit AMA on every platform and advert, and the host declares each stay; licensed properties show a 16-digit ΕΣΛ or a 7-digit ΜΑΓ number instead. Since 1 October 2025, Law 5170/2025 has required smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, a first aid kit and civil liability insurance, with a EUR 5,000 fine for a host who fails the rules.

When to book what

The climate fee drops on 1 November, from EUR 8 to EUR 2 a night for a short-term rental. For a split stay, east and west, book the far base for the middle of the trip and Mytilene for the last night before a flight, since the airport is about 7 km from the city and about 91 km from Skala Eresou.
