A month in Kaunas

A month in Kaunas can escape the EUR 2 nightly pillow fee, but the city's own pages disagree on whether exactly one month is enough. A stay a little longer than a month is exempt on both readings.

What a month means legally

Kaunas exempts long-term rental from its pillow fee. The city's e-service page for the fee says long-term rental of one month or more; its announcement of June 2024 says long-term rental lasting more than one month. The decision text itself could not be read for this guide, so a stay of exactly one calendar month is the one case to confirm with the host. The Civil Code's lease rules were not verified either; ask what kind of contract the month is.

Non-EU visitors may stay 90 days in any 180 across the Schengen area, and since 10 April 2026 the EU Entry/Exit System registers them at the external border. British visitors need a passport issued less than 10 years before arrival and valid at least 3 months after leaving the Schengen area. US citizens need no tourist visa for Lithuania. EU citizens need no residence document for the first 3 months and may be required to register after that.

The tax on a month

Short stays pay EUR 2 per person per night, the rate the city announced in June 2024 for 1 January 2025, with no 2026 change found. A month counts as long-term rental on the e-service page, and a stay of more than a month counts on both pages. Children under 18 pay nothing in any case.

Registration and paperwork

Hosts declare the fee through the city's system each month and show it as a separate line on the bill. Since July 2025 private hosts letting short-term under individual activity or a business certificate are payers too, so a host who lets through a platform should be able to name the activity or certificate.

Whether a Lithuanian host must register guests with the Migration Department or the police could not be verified for this guide.

The areas and the parking that suit a month

Žaliakalnis suits a month with a car: since 2026 the green zone covers a wider area there, at EUR 0.50 an hour on working days from 08:00 to 18:00 and free at weekends. No monthly green zone ticket was found, so ask the host about a private space. The New Town around Laisvės alėja, about 2 km from Town Hall Square, suits a month in the modern centre.

The Old Town is harder with a car over a month: each entry through the reduced-emission zone costs EUR 2, and parking inside costs EUR 2 an hour around the clock. A car kept there needs a space with the apartment; under the 2024 rules, owners of plots inside the zone receive entry permits for their parking places, so ask whether the host has one.

What to check before paying

The dates: a rental that runs a few days past one calendar month is long-term rental on both of the city's readings, while exactly one month depends on which page applies. Ask the host whether the bill will include the fee, which Kaunas providers show as a separate line.

The car: ask whether a space comes with the apartment and which zone the street is in. An apartment inside the Old Town reduced-emission zone means a EUR 2 charge each time the car enters.

What the platforms call a long stay

Airbnb calls 28 nights or more a monthly stay. It charges the first month up front and releases it to the host 24 hours after check-in, then charges each later month 10 days before it starts. A 28-night booking is shorter than a month, so the pillow fee exemption may not cover it. How other platforms label long stays in Kaunas was not verified as of September 2026.

Pitfalls

Booking exactly one month and assuming no fee. The city's two pages set the threshold differently.

Driving in and out of the Old Town each day. Every entry through the cameras costs EUR 2.

Counting Schengen days only in Lithuania. The 90 days in 180 run across the whole Schengen area.
