Where to stay in Katowice
Katowice calls itself the heart of the first metropolis in Poland, and for a driver it works as a base for Silesia. The choice of area decides whether the car sits in a paid zone by the hour or at a free park and ride.

How the areas differ
Śródmieście is the centre around the Market Square. The city's own City Break guide sends visitors to the pubs and restaurants on Mariacka, Dworcowa, Mielęckiego and 3 Maja streets, to the Silesian Theatre and to the Museum of Katowice History. It is the area for a first visit on foot.
About 2 km by road from the Rynek, the Culture Zone stands on the site of a former coal mine. Its four pillars are the Silesian Museum, with most of its exhibition underground, the concert hall of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, the International Congress Centre and the Spodek arena. Rooms here suit a concert, a congress or a match at the Spodek.
Nikiszowiec, about 9 km by road in the north-east of the city, and Giszowiec, about 7 km, are the two miners' settlements designed by Emil and Georg Zillmann: red brick and mosaics on a regular plan in Nikiszowiec, garden city houses around Pod Lipami square in Giszowiec. Brynów and Ligota, about 3 to 6 km from the Rynek, lie around Park Kościuszki and the Ligota railway station.
Staying with a rental car

Street parking in the centre is split into two zones. Zone A, the Śródmiejska Strefa Płatnego Parkowania, covers 3 Maja, the Rynek, Plac Wolności and Uniwersytecka and charges Monday to Saturday from 7.00 to 17.00, except public holidays: PLN 3 for up to 30 minutes, PLN 6 for the first hour, PLN 7.20 for the second, PLN 8.40 for the third and PLN 6 for each hour after. Zone B, around the centre and in parts of Koszutka, Osiedle Paderewskiego and Zawodzie, charges Monday to Friday at PLN 4, PLN 4.80, PLN 5.60 and PLN 4. These are the rates in force since 1 December 2023 under the council resolution of July 2023; no 2026 change was found.
Pay by app (Anypark, skyCash, mPay, moBiLET, ePARK or Flowbird) or at the meter, by cash, card or BLIK. An unpaid stop costs an additional fee of PLN 150 in Zone A, or PLN 100 in Zone B, if settled within 7 days, and twice that afterwards. The monthly permits are sold only to people registered for permanent residence in Katowice or paying income tax there, so a visitor pays by the hour.
Since 29 June 2026, under council resolution XXVII/505/26 of 27 April 2026, a clean transport zone covers the centre inside ul. Skargi, Moniuszki, Pańki, Dudy-Gracza, Warszawska, Francuska, Mariacka Tylna, Dworcowa and Słowackiego. Cars from outside Katowice and its metropolis may enter until the end of 2033 if petrol cars meet Euro 3 or date from 2000 or later and diesels meet Euro 5 or date from 2009 or later. No permit or sticker is needed, and a breach can cost up to PLN 500. The resolution exempts cars that metropolis residents owned before the zone began; whether a rental car registered in the metropolis counts was not verified, so check the car's Euro class with the rental company.
The cheapest night for a car is a park and ride. Brynów on ul. Kościuszki (492 spaces), Zawodzie on ul. 1 Maja (405) and Ligota by the station (110) are free with a valid ZTM ticket and open 4:00 to 24:00. In the Culture Zone, car parks A, B and C charge non-residents PLN 10 an hour on weekdays. GetCar's car rental page for Katowice compares cars for the trip.
Katowice as a base for Silesia

Kraków is about 81 km by road along the A4, whose concession stretch charges PLN 18 for a car at each of its toll plazas, Mysłowice and Balice, from 1 April 2026. Motorways run by the State have been free for cars since July 2023. The city's own itineraries add the Silver Mine in Tarnowskie Góry, about 26 km by road, and the Silesian Opera in Bytom. The airport at Pyrzowice is about 41 km north of the Rynek, with a railway station about 500 metres from the terminals.
Tax and registration for a guest
A Polish commune may charge the opłata miejscowa, a local visitor levy, only where its council adopts one, at most PLN 3.46 a day in 2026. Whether Katowice levies it was unverified as of October 2026. Foreigners staying in Poland up to 30 days need no residence registration.
A government bill would give every short-let flat an ID number to show in its listings; it passed committee on 17 September 2026 and awaits its second reading in the Sejm, so nothing changes for a guest yet.
When to book what
Zone A charges on Saturdays and Zone B does not, so a weekend arrival pays less in the outer zone. Non-EU travellers flying in from outside the Schengen area pass the EU Entry/Exit System at their first Schengen border, and Poland checks its borders with Germany and Lithuania until at least 30 March 2027.
